Book Overview

From the bestselling author of The Wingfeather Saga and award-winning musician and storyteller, Andrew Peterson.
Christianity Today, The Gospel Coalition, WORLD Magazine each named Adorning the Dark as one of their books of the year.

Making something beautiful in a broken world can be harrowing work, and it can't be done alone.

Over the last twenty years, Andrew Peterson has performed thousands of concerts, published four novels, released ten albums, taught college and seminary classes on writing, founded a nonprofit ministry for Christians in the arts, and executive-produced a film--all in a belief that God calls us to proclaim the gospel and the coming kingdom using whatever gifts are at our disposal. He's stumbled along the way, made mistake after mistake, and yet has continually encountered the grace of God through an encouraging family, a Christ-centered community of artists in the church, and the power of truth, beauty, and goodness in Scripture and the arts.

While there are many books about writing, none deal first-hand with the intersection of songwriting, storytelling, and vocation, along with nuts-and-bolts exploration of the great mystery of creativity. In Adorning the Dark, Andrew describes six principles for the writing life:

   Focused on writing song lyrics
This book was recommended by a writers - group to me. It was not as I anticipated, as it was more about writing song lyrics than books, but it was a good story of the authors'life in writing songs and balance between life, family and his Christian faith.

   Powerful Encouragement for Creative Endeavors
So encouraging for a writer or for any other person creating art '' or anything to share with the world. Peterson gets real about self-defense, about poor motivations, about resistance and he consistently points out of the worst battles the surest way out. The cool thing about this book is that, though we write in different genres of writing, his encouragement applies across the board. I think that someone who was struggling with sharing their gift of knitting or teaching or photography or other creative endeavors would benefit greatly from Peterson's encouragement to arrest the dark ''.

   Part Memoir/Part Admonition
Andrew is very forthcoming with his own story and I found his examples of his own struggles to be encouraging. The creation takes work. The creation isn 't easy. But creation is essential because we are what we are. There were times throughout the book where I felt his prose sang quite nicely, as when he said : Love the Lord Your God and adore your neighbor, by making worlds and works of beauty that cover the earth like flowers. Let your homesickness keep you from Spiritual slumber forever. The grand narrative of this book is that we were all created to create, because we were made in the image of God, and we have a true, beautiful, and honest story to tell, in a world that is darkened by Satan and his lies.

Inspiration and Encouragement from a master
I've long been a fan of Andrew Peterson's music and his fiction writing, so that I was a little nervous to read more of a self-revelatory piece of writing. The tone would resonate? Would this inspire or feel self-congratulatory, like so many other books that are a window into the mind and experience of a writer? Happy to report that this book has moved me like his best songs, like the Wingfeather saga, and I am encouraged again to create, to breathe in the life of a God who is the source of it all, and I am probably a bigger fan of Peterson than I was previously. If you are a songwriter, an author, a preacher or anyone who creates ANYTHING, this book is for you. If you know these songs and albums and are a fan of Peterson like I am, this is a must-know!

As good as you would expect from Andrew Peterson, but better.
This amazing book is a part autobiography and another part of advice for writers. There is a lot to think about in these pages and it is hard to describe a book that is both poetic and at the same time beautifully simple. If you are a songwriter, singer and author, teacher or a person interested in creative things in life, I recommend this book to you. It is much less a how-to manual, as it is a memoir by a traveling companion.
