A book of this character is necessarily the work of many men, each of whom contributes some methods of his own, some invention forced upon him by the circumstances, to make the whole. Many of us are located in large cities, where intricate parts of the work can be farmed out to specialists in those lines. Others of us are located in small towns or in the tall timber, where we must produce the work entire and alone. I have endeavored to make this book practicable and workable in either case.

but it is a good start. Not all skills are covered
Derived From Web , May 26, 2022
This book presents detailed information on metal operations in firearms. It is good, but it is dated. Not all skills are covered, but includes references to more dated books, some of which are now very difficult to find. It has enough info to get an idea of what to search for with modern sources like the Internet to try a procedure. In each operation, learn the danger signs, this is no place for the lax.

Not for everyone.

The farther I read, however, the more fascinating it was. Not a guide for contemporary home gunsmiths, but it was well worth reading for the ingenious solutions to solve or modification problems in a time when simply purchasing parts, tools or accessories was not a realistic option.

Some good information, very old.
Derived From Web , Dec 26, 2020
This book is dated from the 1940s. Some of the actual gunsmithing bits still seem to apply mostly. If you're looking to start working on firearms, this is probably not the book you need.

When it says "Advanced," it means it.
Derived From Web , Jun 13, 2020
I'm about to write like the mos illiterate fool ever, but I have to sound this anyway. This book is certainly an advanced book. I wanted to buy a book for a loved one to learn about this art, and I thought about a comprehensive book rather than fluff. This was a mistake on my part. There are very few pictures, so that newbies will struggle with this. That is not to say that it isn 't excellent. If you are truly advanced, however, you may want to save this one for when you are just beginning to play, as the title implies!

Highly recommended

While some of the basic information can be written, most methods and ideas are just as useful today as when they were dated.

Great book, good value
Derived From Web , May 6, 2017
In this book, lots of truly advanced information is contained. Old school stuff is classic. Working on older guns is more of an art than changing parts. Things have been made by hand, treated and fitted by hand.
