Book Overview

Richly informed and written in an engaging style, Against Empire exposes the ruthless agenda and hidden costs of the U.S. empire today. Documenting the pretexts and lies used to justify violent intervention and maldevelopment abroad, Parenti shows how the conversion to a global economy is a victory of finance capital over democracy.

As much of the world suffers unspeakable misery and the Third-Worldization of the United States accelerates, civil society is impoverished by policies that benefit rich and powerful transnational corporations and the national security state. Hard-won gains made by ordinary people are swept away.

A valuable rebuttal to the drumbeat.from the right. --New York Times Book Review

Entertainingly written. --Publishers Weekly

Parenti writes clear, smooth, often provocative prose, has a way of cutting to the heart of complex issues and knows how to tell a story. --Allan Johnson, Author of Human Arrangements

" and still is just that) and so many other things that just seem like (and are sometimes claimed to be) incompetence
This book is a must read for all who wants to know what is going on with the foreign wars, the war on terror, the war on drugs, the so called Dept. of defense and so many other things that seem to me like incompetence. After reading this book you will be informed of these things and many more follies of US policy!

The Truth that is conveniently left out of Western Curriculum
Extremely well written! '' The way the West has manufactured a perfect system for the exploitation of the third world details. This system, which benefits the Western capitalist class, forces the rest of the world into poverty and prevents any way out of this poverty.

   Essential Reading for Every American
Tucker Carlson says essential reading for all Americans : you hate America if you question the establishment. The quality of the product was excellent in both content and aesthetics. Easy to read. His writing is meant to be easily digested by any English literate. Could be skimmed in a sitting.

   Powerful book
Parenti connects many of the threads that so many people in this country recognize and dislike about our polity. He points out that these things are not simply disparate and coincidental, but are part of a vast imperial apparatus that has been built over the centuries and decades. Like Illegal Immigration ''. He certainly shows who is to blame, and it is not them. Like foreign aid? Well, he elucidates exactly what it is used for and helping local populations is barely a tertiary role in that. Do you wonder how the US routinely messes its foreign interventions in favor of human rights? Well, that is not the reason for the intervention. The goal is achieved, but it is not the one we are told about. It is really a wonderful read and a book that I intend to read again in the near future.

A great framework for thinking about foreign policy.
There is a mythology in the United States that we are a kind of salvation army that fights the bad guys and helps the needy. In fact, the US foreign policy serves mostly the favored few of the ruling class, rather than the common, in this country and abroad. This is given no recognition in the mainstream - political discussion and media commentary. This book is thus a foreign framework for thinking about great policy.
