Today I moved to Alcatraz, a twelve-acre rock covered with cement, topped with bird turd and surrounded by water. I'm not the only kid who lives here. There are twenty-three other kids who live on the island because their dads work as guards or cooks or doctors or electricians for the prison, like my dad does. And then there are a ton of murderers, rapists, hit men, con men, stickup men, embezzlers, connivers, burglars, kidnappers and maybe even an innocent man or two, though I doubt it. The convicts we have are the kind other prisons don't want. I never knew prisons could be picky, but I guess they can. You get to Alcatraz by being the worst of the worst. Unless you're me. I came here because my mother said I had to.

   Summer Reading for advanced 6th grade ELA
Note: This is a summer reading requirement for sixth-grade English teachers. Though my son enjoyed the book a lot, annotating takes a little of that excitement away by slowing it down. Thanks to other reviewers, I discussed Al Capone with him before I read the book. We also discussed the meaning of rape and the possibility of a revival of the Christian faith, in the manner I was comfortable explaining it. Even with the disclaimer, I would not recommend this book for children that young. Overall, I enjoyed the book, even though it had a few plot holes, said Jennette Tamayo, a sixth-grade English teacher at West Babylon Middle School. My son enjoyed the book and I think he will do well on the test.

   I love this book
I've read the entire book, and I'm in love. I had to read it for an education class, but I am so glad I did. I will definitely be reading more of the Al Capone books by this author. It was also recommended to me in one of my classes that deals with special education. This book is not only for teenagers but I think it's beneficial for any age group. I'm in college and I enjoyed reading it, and I got a lot out of it, too. It's just that you don't have to hesitate to buy it.

   Highly recommended book for young readers
I read this book because I was curious about the book, even though it was on sale at the time. It's a young adult book that I probably would have really liked when I was about 10 or so, Hughes said. I'm not that old, but I really liked it. I have given copies to a few young readers, and they all really liked it too. There are some really interesting historical things in the book and well-written characters of all ages. Even if you think of it as a kid, I wouldn't think that anyone would be offended by the material and issues brought up in the book in case you were thinking of giving it to a kid you know.

   Wholesome reading
Got the book? A great book for young people, too. Teaches acceptance of people with disabilities as well as forgiving and being friends with people who are not easy to get along with. Also the children are very obedient and respectful of their parents even when they don't always agree with their decisions, it says.

Although this is a Newbery Award winner, it is not a children's book. There are numerous sexual innuendos that are best suited for middle school students, he said. He also voiced his dismay that Al Capone was made out to be a hero of the situation.

   Mixed feelings
My middle schooler had this assigned to her: read it to the seventh-grade girls. He has Down Syndrome and is autistic. While the character has high support needs, the ableism and labeling of severe autism by the author was extremely uncomfortable. The scene mentioned by another reviewer that Natalie takes off her clothing in front of her brother was unnecessary, and my child's teacher felt like this was a good depiction of autism. The Pentagon has said that although the test may not be conducted, it is highly likely. It has opened some good conversations with all of my children about autism, developmental delays, ableism, and well-intentioned people whose impact can be very negative. It's a mom, a nurse, a wife, an autistic seamstress.
