Book Overview

Mary B. Addison killed a baby.

Allegedly. She didn't say much in that first interview with detectives, and the media filled in the only blanks that mattered: a white baby had died while under the care of a churchgoing black woman and her nine-year-old daughter. The public convicted Mary and the jury made it official. But did she do it? She wouldn't say.

Mary survived six years in baby jail before being dumped in a group home. The house isn't really home--no place where you fear for your life can be considered a home. Home is Ted, who she meets on assignment at a nursing home.

There wasn't a point to setting the record straight before, but now she's got Ted--and their unborn child--to think about. When the state threatens to take her baby, Mary must find the voice to fight her past. And her fate lies in the hands of the one person she distrusts the most: her Momma. No one knows the real Momma. But does anyone know the real Mary?

In this gritty and haunting debut, Tiffany D. Jackson explores the gray areas in our understanding of justice, family, and truth, acknowledging the light and darkness alive in all of us.

   Decent read
Loved the book, took a second to get into it but once i finally got there I was into it 100% just to be let down at the unfinished plot lines at the end. Hope for a second book to hopefully get some answers.

Parents need to look past reviews and take a closer look at this one
I bought this book for my 13yo daughter because she likes realistic fiction and this title has won a ton of awards. I was shocked by the language in this book and I think parents deserve to see some excerpts before sharing this one with their kids.

   Wow!
I never saw that ending coming. Talk about a turn of events. Mary was a quiet yet confusing young lady. I really enjoyed this book, Morgenthau said. Totally ready to read my next book from this author.

   Good Read
I enjoyed reading this book, however, I didn't like the ending. Needed answers to a lot of questions. There may be a sequel.

   Wow wow WOW!!!
Please enjoy this book. OMG!!!!!!!!! This book is by far the best. Still thinking about it. Tiffany D. Jackson, who stars in a revival of "The Young and the Restless," is pregnant. I absolutely LOVED it.

   Dark But Good....
Stellar writing and character development, sharp dialogue and pacing, a tense plot. Dark, but good, kept me wondering until the end.

   Take your time and Read
Truly enjoyed this story this author is amazing I loved how your kept cheering on Mary and seeing where the story takes us. There won't be a part 2 be so prepared to re-read this book so you can really understand everything from the death of the child, the cross necklace, and the mind of Mary.

   Frustrating
SPOILER ALERT: The second part of this article deals with the constant use of Allegedly by the police. It became very gimmicky, and the slang in dialogue and narration felt forced. The stereotypes were off-putting. The second half was also slow, with many players still not fully recovered from the first. But to get to the end and find out Mary actually did do it, even accidentally, felt like a waste after becoming emotionally involved and hope she doesn't get off, Marsden said. She didn't even black out and forget, which seemed to be more where the story was going. But right at the end, it's revealed she did kill her and didn't feel bad about it. I feel cheated.

   Good read
A great book. I really wanted to believe that she didn't do anything and that it was her mother who was just trying to save herself, but the twist at the end was crazy.

   Well....
Great book. Everything up until the conclusion. I'm really upset the book ended this way, Byrne said. I read that the book ending was dissatisfying, but l had no idea it would be that bad. The book is beautifully written and it's hard to put it down, but the ending feels rushed and incomplete. Even though I don't think it's possible to have a sequel, I really think that this is just how the story ends.
