An excellent introduction of one of the greatest efforts to defeat the Germans in WWII.
   10-12 year olds should read
Keeps him engaged to learn what is next going to happen. Great read for people who want their children to understand WWII and how it affected individuals. He comes daily to recap what he read to me. Sadly, people die, but it opened the segue to talking to him about the war and why Hitler was so scary, though he seemed logical and not crazy at the beginning.
   Would recommend!
Bought this for my 12-year-old neighbor boy who doesn 't like to read. I have been reading the book aloud to me and we have truly enjoyed it. The author has developed the characters to make them relatable and has also given interesting historical details to present an accurate view of actual significant places in this fictional but realistic account of events. It has been wonderful to see my doorbell ring and to hear my young friend there with the book under his arm and WANTING to read!
   Good middle school read
It was surprisingly easy to read and didn 't gloss over the more negative aspects of war in general and WW2 specifically without being overly graphic. It jumped a bit, but each jump was an easy transition.
Engaging for History loving students and kids!
It is rare that he reads with a novel for hours and then sits until he finishes it. He will read books of the Encyclpedia type for hours, but longer prose is not something that has captured him... until now. He loved the different views and noted that it was great to see a book about WWII action that included female characters like this. He is pretty well versed in D - Day and WWII history, so that might have helped him connect so quickly, but this was a book that couldn 't put it down for sure! We can not recommend this enough!
   Loose Pages!
I ordered this book for my granddaughter, who had heard that this author was a good one to read about WWll. She likes the book, but it began to fall apart immediately. The pages are not stuck as they should be on the spine of the book. We can not fix it. As she falls and reads the page just falls out!
Gratz is the best Author for kids!
The book of the year or the next decade was the best refugee. My son liked this book or secondly Grenade's best.
   great book
It is a sad book, but very good. i was shocked that Bill was killed, and Henry was my favorite, it was my first book he read.
From my 5th grader, This Book will get you hooked on Alan gratz and you will read every one of his books after that, if this is your first alan gratz book.
My 12 yr old son DEVOURS this series of books!
I don 't know about you, but when I want to try a series of books for my son, I buy only one or the first before buying the set, so I started him on Refugee from a school library fundraiser. LOVED it... long story short, he devours seriously these books! Takes them to school for free time, no back talk to get into bed a little earlier for reading time, begging at bedtime seriously for just 5 minutes, I just wish there was more to the job than the mom or dad. My question would be if your son or daughter loved this series too, where do I go next? Open to suggestions as there is only one left in this series he is about to begin the Code of Honor... Help!
