Book Overview

Though very much an individual and spiritual artist, Alfonse Mucha was a defining figure of the Art Nouveau era and is loved for his distinctive lush style and images of beautiful women in arabesque poses among the plethora of paintings, posters, advertisements and designs he produced. Admire a whole range of his work here in its full glory with succinct accompanying text.

Negative reviews right on one point
Also bought this for my artist granddaughter, who is building a collection of art books. Mucha is one of my favorites, so I looked at the books as well. I read the reviews and was concerned about the comments on the layout. Almost none of the reproductions are located on the same pages as the text that describes them. The layout, however, is also dramatic and a pleasure to look at. The cover has raised portions and makes a wonderful tactile presentation on the coffee table or on a bookshelf. However, because of the complaints I decided to buy the book Sarah Mucha as well as it had more information, particularly on his late works.

   Gorgeous
I had no idea when I bought it, but the cover has actually some sparkly embellishments on it. I am an art student and Mucha is my favorite artist of all time, so I had to get this book.

Beautifully Done Review of Mucha's Works
For fans of Mucha, this book provides a illustrative overview of his work -- mainly his posters and beautiful style. Here I did not see much of his painterly work, which is remarkable and not as well-known as one might hope - but that is not unusual, since he is most known for his promotional stuff. I gave this book as a gift, so I did not read the text in its entirety, but I was pleased with it nonetheless, and the recipient seemed delighted. It is weighty, dressy-looking and would serve nicely as the proverbial coffee-table book.

   Absolutely gorgeous
This book is amazing, Holy Cow. It is a beautiful size, heavy paper, the illustrations are nice and the illustrations are heavy. It is SO much more than I expected, I have to look at other books by this publisher.

   Nice book, one complaint
One complaint is that it does not go into detail of each specific work and story behind the pieces, like I was looking for, but does explain some works within the text. The images don 't necessarily go along with the text.

   Phenomenal Showcase!
Apart from organization arguments, the collected works, presented from an artistic content perspective, more than compensate for most deficiencies. Yes, it is true. For additional biographical data on Mucha, one of the many biography focused texts out there could be a good companion. That said, I gave it five stars because the work itself speaks well... for itself. Beautiful collection and presentation, inspiring collection!

   Look elsewhere
Both as a presentation of Mucha's artwork and an enjoyable story, it fails on both parts. Too many times in the book sentences get cut off and you have to look at over pages just to finish an extra few words and then skip back to look at the images. Rhythm break-ups like this really throw the experience, the biggest problem is that the images are not placed in any discernible order. Almost without fail, if they are talking about one of his produced works, another random piece of his will be there and the talked about work will appear dozens of pages later. If you have the piece, why isn 't it connected to the story about it? Why aren 't pieces produced during the time you spoke in this section of the book? Lastly, productions are ok, which is why this gets 2 stars and not 1. Art books are hard, but this doesn 't get a pass.

   Good production values
Worth the money agree with comments that there is no correlation between the images of the historical work and the art's narrative. Even if the narrative refers to a specific work... NO IMAGE OF THE WORK... anywhere! Pretty amazing . I think that a high school editor would have flagged this. But the narrative is high and production value is decent. I enjoy this book ''.
