Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

Amos the mouse and Boris the whale: a devoted pair of friends with nothing at all in common, except good hearts and a willingness to help their fellow mammal. They meet after Amos sets out to sea in his homemade boat, the Rodent, and soon finds himself in extreme need of rescue. Enter Boris. But there will come a day, long after Boris has gone back to a life of whaling about and Amos has gone back to his life of mousing around, when the tiny mouse must find a way to rescue the great whale.

The tender yet comical story of this friendship is recorded in text and pictures that are a model of rich simplicity. Here, with apparent ease and concealed virtuosity, Caldecott medalist William Steig brings two winning heroes to life.

Amos & Boris is a 1971 New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Book of the Year, Notable Children's Book of the Year, and Outstanding Book of the Year.

Beautiful story - but lots of big words and concepts
The story and illustrations of this children's book are absolutely delightful. But parents of young children be aware, the words are many on each page and they are big and advanced and concepts like death. I love exposing my child to these big words, but it can get tiring when they stop asking for what it means, I wonder how much of the story he truly understands. I also found myself choked at the end when the two friends decided to never see each other again after a near death situation. This book covers some big life stuff... but is a beautiful book with a lasting story that goes deep.

A simple tale , with an artfully told message
This is one of the most empowering concepts to grasp for a young child. But later on, when the mouse is able to return the favor by saving the beached whale, we cheer him up! He gives us an immense sea, a phosphorescent sky and a mouse's quivering daintiness. As well, his presentation of some very grown up concepts of having ambitions in life, whether we die to heaven and having to move on and say goodbye to a dear friend. My son and I recommend this book enthusiastically!

   Love this book!
I love whales so I purchased this book to read to my 3 - 12 year old. While I found the book at first to be wordy and to use large vocabulary, he became used to it after a few readings and even learned some new words. I can see why it is recommended for ages 5+. But I think this book sparked a long and more complex love of new stories in my toddler. With just turned 4, he starts with some of the more sophisticated books and we have started searching for longer and more YA stories like this one. I love this book and some of the parts we laugh at completely. He thinks its soooooo funny when Amos is flipped over Boris's tail and falls in the water. I love William Steig's work and am excited to see more of his books. And so is BONUS!!! The Common Core!!

   "Bowling along under full sail"
As far as I am concerned, Robert Steig should be awarded a Pulitzer Prize for his body of children's literature. I don 't think that any one authorillustrator has such a catalog of playful, meaningful, generous, witty, profound and literate books for young people. Amos and Boris is a distillation of all great themes of life - friendship, courage, spiritual ecstacy, the question of an afterlife, Altruism and Love. There is nothing metaphysical or cobbed on, no subtext. The genius of Steig lies in his ability to create stories that appeal to small children and their parents and grandparents alike -- they ring true on all levels. The characters in this little book have become part of my heart, as has William Steig. Don 't miss it.

   Profound Story of Friendship
I love William Steig's work and this is one of his best picture books. Steig fills his books with love and family and friendship and with a love of life. Rarely will you find a book about friendship in any type of literature better than this. When the mouse has an accident on his sailing ship, he is saved by the whale. The two strike an immediate and deep friendship, though the two are forced to be worlds apart. It is also remarkable for the beautiful prose, humor and the splendid pictures of Steig. Amos and Boris is truly a picture book for children and adults.

Cover had lots of creases but the inside was fine
The soft cover on the back and front had a lot of scuffs, but the interior of the book was unmarked and fine.

   Wonderful Story
The story concerns adventure, fear and friendship. It is not easy to read alone for a child.

love Wm Steig, love this book
I love all Steig's books, and this is very sweet. The vocabulary is big, but Steig never hesitated to include challenging words in his stories! Kids can easily learn new words.
