Format: Paperback
Condition: Good
This new and enlarged third edition contains a new section on hands, selected by Heidi Lenssen; a wide selection of illustrations from the works of Vesalius, Leonardo, Goya, Ingres, Michelangelo, and others, newly augmented with 10 plates from Cloquet's Anatomie de l'Homme and 16 illustrations from Boscay's Anatomy; 28 photographs of growing children from the research work of Nancy Bayley, plus 6 action studies (each consisting of about 30 photographs) from Muybridge; a bibliography compiled by Adolph Placzek; a total of more than 350 illustrations, showing the placement, function, and characteristics of every anatomical detail of importance to the artist.
For more than forty years, this book has been recognized as the most thorough reference work on art anatomy in the world. Now, it recommends itself even more strongly to the serious artist as an important study aid. Among its features are: (1) Clear, systematic presentation, taking the student step by step from the simpler skeletal drawings at the beginning to the more complicated body-in-action sketches at the end. (2) The juxtaposition of anatomical drawings and life photographs, making it easy to compare the inner structure of the body with its outer form. (3) Cross-section drawings that give the artist a thorough understanding of the relation of the muscles to each other, to the bone structure, and to the internal

(6) A supplementary text on important features of each anatomical position, including the action of the muscles and their origin.

Good for beginners. Perfect for me.
Derived From Web , Jun 4, 2022
I am a hobbyist artist and I wanted to find a book of anatomy to learn how to draw the human figure at the suggestion of an actual artist friend. This certainly taught me a lot about the human skeleton and muscles from just about every angle I could need.

I really like having this book as its focus is on creating ...

I really like having this book, because its focus is on creating lifelike action poses. It then shows how these move when you draw an action pose. I found it very helpful in presenting humans moving in a scene.

A very good reference book for representational artists
Derived From Web , Jan 11, 2022
This is not a book on how to draw, but a visual reference for the more advanced artist. There are also examples of the Old Masters, as well as plates from Muybridge's photo series of the body in motion. I wouldn't recommend this book for children, mostly because they would be bored with it. Some critical reviews complain about the nude nudity and full frontal photos of children. If this bothers you, you are probably not a serious representational artist anyway, so buy it. Frankly, anything that your children see in Anime or Marvel will be more refreshing than anything in this book, which is more like an old medical text.

Acceptable described as "Good"
Derived From Web , May 1, 2021
I liked the book itself ''. The binding came apart. If it would describe it only for the charcoal spots and creases on the cover, Good would describe it. This book falls apart. This book has been in the back of a VW bus that went to a Grateful Dead concert.

poor quality printing
Derived From Web , Jan 10, 2021
The content of this book would be great if the reproduction of the images were more than a bad photocopy. Every photo is printed too darkly to see the details. The reproductions of the masters'drawings are uninspiring and grey. This book will return to me.

Good reference of anatomy for artists.
Derived From Web , Jul 5, 2019
Great book for exploring the anatomy of the human body, especially helpful for artists. It depicts the skeleton, muscles and skin in different ways so that artists can replicate realistic movement. It is a very useful book, but I found the information somewhat disjointed. I recommend this book as a reference. If you find my review helpful, mark it.

Too advance for simple art
Derived From Web , Sep 5, 2017
This is a really good book by Anatomy. It is a little bit too advanced for me, as I was looking for basic anatomy just for drawing that this shows muscles and veins and everything else underneath the skin. This book would be great for somebody who is looking for a more realistic or hyper realistic anatomy. This will not show you how to draw body parts or anything like that, though this is basically showing you what body parts look like under the skin and you live from there. This is definitely a book for somebody who is more focused on the details of anatomy versus the basics are the overall concept of anatomy.
