Great supplement to the story books
They are written at a higher Lexile level than the stories, but it makes them fun to read together. My 6 year old doesn't have the patience to read on her own through a research guide, but together it makes for a fun project... she gets to tell me about what happened in the story to Jack and Annie and together we learn some funny facts about what time the story was about.

Ok not as fun as the animals
This still helped him better understand the story, but it was not interesting enough for him to read it in any way. )

A "gold standard" book I have used for many years in my classroom.
A gold standard book, I have used in my classroom for many years. Mary Pope Osborne knows exactly how to explain history to children in a way that is interesting, intriguing and age-appropriate. Her coverage of Pompeii in this book is particularly well done, and I love how she deals with the tragedy with just the right amount of emphasis, but not too much, and then helps us learn how the Pompeii Romans lived through the things we discovered in Pompeii.
