Book Overview

From the best-selling author of Fun Home, Time magazine s No. 1 Book of the Year, a brilliantly told graphic memoir of Alison Bechdel becoming the artist her mother wanted to be.
Alison Bechdel s Fun Home was a pop culture and literary phenomenon. Now, a second thrilling tale of filial sleuthery, this time about her mother: voracious reader, music lover, passionate amateur actor. Also a woman, unhappily married to a closeted gay man, whose artistic aspirations simmered under the surface of Bechdel's childhood . . . and who stopped touching or kissing her daughter good night, forever, when she was seven. Poignantly, hilariously, Bechdel embarks on a quest for answers concerning the mother-daughter gulf. It's a richly layered search that leads readers from the fascinating life and work of the iconic twentieth-century psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott, to one explosively illuminating Dr. Seuss illustration, to Bechdel s own (serially monogamous) adult love life. And, finally, back to Mother to a truce, fragile and real-time, that will move and astonish all adult children of gifted mothers.

EXCELLENT EXAMINATION OF ONE'S LIFE AND ONE'S FAMILY
Bechdel, who lives as a gay woman openly and freely, is a genius who examines her own life so closely that she feels like she knows her. She grew up in very strange circumstances and worked hard to understand her relationships with her parents, which we all try to do. She teaches you to go deep into your own personality and be honest about who you are, what your faults are and what your beliefs are. If you haven, you haven. If you have not seen the Broadway show, Fun Home, grab the phone right now and order tickets!

It turns out she WAS her mother.
This excellently drawn graphic novel tells Bechdel's own family history, but also winds up in information from developmental psychology and mother-child relationship, without being boring or didactic. More importantly, it reflects on the theme of memoir, adding Bechdel's unique voice to the ongoing discussion of culture and the struggle with this genre.

   Good...but not Fun Home
Good follow up, but not engaging as fun home. I love raw, real and honest stories like this. Yes, recommended... but not a must read like fun home.

   Great
Great follow-up to the first book Fun House, but sometimes lull in the progress of the story. I would definitely recommend this book.

   Incredible
Another fantastic novel by Bechdel is published. I may have liked a fun home a little more but this is an incredible read. I can 't wait for her next book!

   Not for me
I think that someone might like this, but I couldn t get past page 20 because all it had done was talk about how it would tell some story, but she couldn t figure out how. And then she spoke about all the ways she could not or had thought of ideas. The process is talking CUT. When a story veers around telling a story for this long, I can 't help, but I assume that the author is not a very skilled story teller. Strangely, this book was recommended by a writing professor, but I doubt that I ever find out if it is good. I don 't have the patience to read the stuff I would have edited out of line. It also reads very diaristic, which I don 't care about. I was not very aesthetically satisfied with the artistic style ''. Obviously, these are all very personal aesthetic preferences, and, like I said, a writing professor recommended it. I don 't.

   Great addition
The language gets very confusing as it approaches this place where the outside and the inside touch... or fail to in this memoir, Bechdel takes in her mother and her own fears about communicating with her and others. I adore Bechdel's work, but this time I am hooking the story around psychiatry kind of waters it down. It is a 4 and half out of 5.

Kindle edition very hard to read
The book itself is a deeply moving, well written and drawn, but this kindle edition is very difficult to navigate. I read Bechdel's fun home on Kindle and was easy to read and it was a pleasure to have it on my kindle, but Are You My Mother? It was very difficult to move from one panel to the next, and there was no way to enlarge panels. You're better off with the print edition, which offers a deep look at the relationship between children, mothers and the whole family dynamic with lots of insight about Virginia Woolf, Donald Winnicot, psychoanalysis, lesbianism, autobiography and all the complexity of life.

   Never got the download
Kept sent a message that it could not be downloaded-but that's exactly what it was supposed to be. For me, wasted money. Beware the buyer!

Great book, but ComiXology does not work with this.
When purchasing this on kindle there is a cryptic message that says it includes ComiXology but doesn't really explain what it is. It does not give you the choice to decline. Eventually, I figured out that ComiXology is an app that is supposed to enhance the viewing of comic books. This book can also be read on Kindle. After downloading the ComiXology app on my Android, I realized that many of the scenes do not actually show up. Only certain colors or lines appear, I love the book and illustrations, but I do not like ComiXology. My review would be 5 stars if ComiXology worked or if I had the option to buy the kindle version just now.
