One of the most unpretentiously profound books I've read in a long timemodestly magnificent. Maureen Corrigan, Fresh Air

A beautiful novel, bursting at the seams with empathy. Elle

How much can a family forgive?

A profoundly moving novel about two neighboring families in a suburban town, the friendship between their children, a tragedy that reverberates over four decades, the daily intimacies of marriage, and the power of forgiveness.

Francis Gleeson and Brian Stanhope, rookie cops in the NYPD, live next door to each other outside the city. What happens behind closed doors in both housesthe loneliness of Franciss wife, Lena, and the instability of Brians wife, Anne, sets the stage for the explosive events to come.

Ask Again, Yes is a deeply affecting exploration of the lifelong friendship and love that blossoms between Kate Gleeson and Peter Stanhope, born six months apart. One shocking night their loyalties are divided, and their bond will be tested again and again over the next 40 years. Luminous, heartbreaking, and redemptive, Ask Again, Yes reveals the way childhood memories change when viewed from the distance of adulthoodvillains lose their menace and those who appeared innocent seem less so. Kate and Peters love story, while haunted by echoes from the past, is marked by tenderness, generosity, and grace.

The neighbors' lives are intertwined through horrific circumstances, but they span two generations affected by the events of one another's actions and that change their lives for good and bad for years to come.

   Very relatable
An excellent read. Years can lessen pain and heal wounds, he said. Relationships take hard work and determination, Raymond said. I would recommend this book to anyone. I will eventually buy the book and add it to the bookcase. It will help you evaluate your own choices, your past and your present. Definitely recommend it to anyone.

One of the best books I've ever read ...
I don't know whether it's good or bad, but I have a habit of watching thru a book as to why the book is named that way. Same goes for movies. Being married twice has made me wish I could have been as mature as Kate is throughout the story. The story is told with steadfast love, understanding and forgiveness.

Wanted to like this more than I did
Overall, I'd say it was a good read, but I'm not a huge fan of Gillian. What a great deal of insight and research, albeit one that was also explored insufficiently. It's primarily a tale of the son and his next door neighbor, centering around a critical moment in both of their lives. That said, I'm conflicted because the book shows how his life progresses and you see the impact of his childhood, but it almost feels like the resolution is wrapped up too quickly and too cleanly, particularly the mental health of his parent.

   Good, but disappointing
The writing of the novel was very good, the storytelling was very good, but the story itself was missing. The incident occurs early in the story and is almost brushed aside as a necessary tool to get to the rest of the novel, which disappoints in the lack of actual events to write about. I enjoyed the style of writing and that accounts for all of the stars given because the story contributed none, he said. Even with all the bells and whistles, the story is modest compared with the wealth of Rowling's books.

A story that stayed with me
The shocking moments in the plot are powerful, but it is the author's ability to make the little events and the relationships so meaningful that really resonates.

In the End, We are All Human
Mary Beth Keane reveals the complicated lines between bitterness and forgiveness in a family drama about the broken shell of a broken family. In a recent interview, Mr. McCall asked, "Do you think relationships are hard or all wrong?" Even in the most difficult of circumstances, forgiveness and even love are possible.

A beautiful story of love, compassion and forgiveness - beautifully written
One of my favorite quotes from literature is from Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, in which the hero laments, "There is to the credit of human nature that except when its selfishness is brought into play, it loves more readily than it hates." Mary Beth Keane inspires her readers to believe in the endurance and triumph of the human spirit.

   Will this ever end?
Most men, I think, feel this way when their wife's girlfriend tells them about her day. Lord Falconer's widow, Elizabeth, replied: "I am very sorry Lord Falconer did not heed your call." After the finale, I had to wade through the swamp of mundane details and action-less story, until I found what the heck this book was about. Every time I thought action was coming, I was disappointed. And what is with the trend lately in which the mother of the book has a mental disorder? I get that we're all trying to be accepting and putting mental health issues in the normal column, but gees, it's getting overdone.

   Best I’ve read 2018, 2019!
It took me away. The story, the character development, the real life feel of the film was what drew me in. Wow! That was pretty impressive, right? I'm not a writer, so words are escaping me. Just don't miss this book. It's just beautiful, beautifully written.
