Book Overview

Perfect for newly independent readers--the amazing true story of Michaela DePrince, one of America's top ballerinas.

At the age of three, Michaela DePrince found a photo of a ballerina that changed her life. She was living in an orphanage in Sierra Leone at the time, but was soon adopted by a family and brought to America. Michaela never forgot the photo of the dancer she once saw, and quickly decided to make her dream of becoming a ballerina come true. She has been dancing ever since and is now a principal dancer in New York City and has been featured in the ballet documentary First Position, as well as Dancing with the Stars, Good Morning America, and Oprah magazine.

Young readers will love learning about this inspiring ballerina in this uplifting and informative leveled reader. This Step 4 Step into Reading book is for newly independent readers who read simple sentences with confidence.

   Just right
I bought this book for a six-year-old biracial dancer who attends ballet classes. I was already familiar with Georges '' s story, but this retelling quite simply brought me to tears. It is really very appropriate and is very poetic for its intended audience. We loved this book very much and recommend it highly.

   Inspiring and beautiful true story!
I bought it for my daughter, who wants to be a ballerina. Although it is for older children, young children can also benefit from the story. Despite her rough beginning, Michaela was determined to become a ballerina and she did! She thanks her adoptive mother for helping her pursue her dreams. Book is great!

Love seeing representation in these books
Glad to see little girls of color represented in this book, so my children have someone to relate and emulate. For my 7 year old, great read. We would love to see more books produced like this.

   Inspiring Story, Favorite among students
My first and second year students really love this book. It is an inspiring story of Mikaela DePrince, who was adopted from Africa and is a current ballerina. First graders may need some help reading the book, but they were motivated to try.

   Amazing
So surprising to have a children's book written with such a compelling plot. My child and I both enjoyed it despite the fact that she said : This is about a girl, I don 't like it when we sat to read it first.
