Excellent book that entertains and educates

I had this book on my wish list for over a year and I am so sorry that I didn 't buy it earlier. I am constantly on the lookout for books like this, ones that entertain, educate and inspire. I am disappointed too often ''. Many children's books are delivered over promise and under deliver, but not this. This book does an excellent job of introducing us to Tony Sarg, his time and his place, as well as the creative process he went through to create the Macy Thanksgiving Day Parade. The author combines science and history with the suspense of what will he do next? '' We read this one every Thanksgiving and save it for future grandchildren. Plus, we make our own rod puppet, inspired by the book. Recommend highly.

Tony and his big dreams

Macy brings the story behind the Melissa Sweet Parade and the history of the man behind the work to life. The story begins with a big boy, Tony, who has little dreams to make marionettes. His dreams come not only true, but bloom as he is challenged to make those marionettes larger and more spectacular. What I enjoyed the most about this book is the historical aspect behind what has become a favorite Thanksgiving Day tradition. The artwork within the story is phenomenal and perfectly accompanies the story line. It reads like a scrap book and is easy to follow and enjoy. While originally purchased for my great granddaughter, who loves balloons and because I adore toddler illustration, it is more appropriate for grades 2-4.

While reading this delightful true story about Tony Sarg, the brilliant puppeteer behind Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, I keep hearing the strains of Victor Arden and Ohman's old show tunes in my mind. I love a parade, the tramping of feet, I hear every beat I hear from a drum. Growing up, and later when my own children were at home every Thanksgiving Day, began watching the Macy's Parade on live television. The bands and floats were giant, but the favorites were the nice balloons, except at Santa on his sleigh at the end. This book is certain to become a holiday favorite of teachers, librarians, parents and children. This book with Michael Ian Black's A Pig Parade is a funny idea for a story time session filled with facts and fun!

An enchanting book full of parade history

Balloons Over Broadway is a charming story with vivid descriptions and pictures. I read this book to my pre-school class and were mystified by the magic and mechanics that this book reveals. This book is truly a story of the whole type, including history with the actual story of Tony and the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. It has the enchanting magic of a holiday themed story, but also includes a STEM aspect, as Tony came to invent his giant balloons. Balloons Over Broad also includes beautifully illustrated pictures that will attract the attention of children and adults, using a simplistic style, but also including some images from Tony's actual life. Overall, this is a perfect book that introduces an important part of the history of Thanksgiving Day and explains an opportunity to learn how parades came to be.
