Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

An unforgettable first novel about coming of age one sweet summer--and learning to love what you have.

The summer Opal and her father, the preacher, move to Naomi, Florida, Opal goes into the Winn-Dixie supermarket--and comes out with a dog. A big, ugly, suffering dog with a sterling sense of humor. A dog she dubs Winn-Dixie. Because of Winn-Dixie, the preacher tells Opal ten things about her absent mother, one for each year Opal has been alive. Winn-Dixie is better at making friends than anyone Opal has ever known, and together they meet the local librarian, Miss Franny Block, who once fought off a bear with a copy of WAR AND PEACE. They meet Gloria Dump, who is nearly blind but sees with her heart, and Otis, an ex-con who sets the animals in his pet shop loose after hours, then lulls them with his guitar.

Opal spends all that sweet summer collecting stories about her new friends and thinking about her mother. But because of Winn-Dixie or perhaps because she has grown, Opal learns to let go, just a little, and that friendship--and forgiveness--can sneak up on you like a sudden summer storm.

Recalling the fiction of Harper Lee and Carson McCullers, here is a funny, poignant, and utterly genuine first novel from a major new talent.

   Heart warming book
My 10yr old daughter read it and loved it. She really enjoyed the storyline and how the book was written. She enjoyed seeing how a dog was able to bring so much love to so many people and create friendships that didn't seem possible.

Wonderful book for adults and children
You can read this book without a child. If you do, you should read it together. It is a wonderful book that shows how lonely everyone is. You can help others get over their loneliness without realizing that you are creating a web of friends for them. Have a party for me. I will bring the potato salad.

   A Dog That Can Smile
A girl goes to the grocery store and returns home with her dog. She named the dog Winn- Dixie because he was found in the store. A motherless child with a loving father is in a store- front church. There are some pretty hilarious adventures for Opal and Winn- Dixie. The book was a Newbery Award Winner when it was first published. It touches the reader. The theme of this delightful story is kindness, acceptance and caring for all.

   Updated - why?
For the past 3 years, I have read this book with my fourth grade class. One of my favorite stories is the winner. There is a strong beginning, a sympathetic main character, an interesting plot, and a dog in the story. The reason for the 4- star rating is due to the fact that this version was updated and affects our ability to read the book together easily. Miss Franny gave a copy of Gone With the Wind to Gloria Dump. She gave David Copperfield instead. Several pages of the book were different due to the change. 9 and 10 year old kids are more difficult to follow along. This was probably a political move that was unnecessary.

   Book pages messed up.
I don't normally write bad reviews, but this one was required for my 8 yr old to read during the summer. They went from page 96 to 129 to 160 and back again.

   Charming Pet and People Story
An easy read for anyone to enjoy. I am 70 years old. It keeps you interested, but it also has a bit of sadness at times. There are wonderful experiences for all age groups in the book. A beloved dog is included. It can be read in an afternoon. It is a winner.

One of the best and emotional books
The book is hard to read in the light of emotions because you live it together with Opal. Everything matters to her. It is an amazing story for the whole family as it contains important messages and examples for the kids to learn.

   At the same time!
My daughter was able to listen and complete her home assignment at the same time. She was able to stop and think about what she was listening to and answering questions about the book.

A dog that can smile and a book worth reading
From the moment I read about how Opal viewed the preacher, I was drawn to the way Kate DiCamillo tells a story. Her words are all wrapped up in the pages of a novel. I enjoyed reading it in one sitting. This is the type of book you can't put down. If you missed reading it, I challenge you to pick it up.

My 7-year old daughter’s says it’s her favorite book!
I wanted a book with more substance for my child to read over the summer. The reviews were great and she liked dogs. Love the author. She devoured this book and won't let her friend borrow it because it's become her favorite book. I think she will pick it up again. The book has a lot of charm and the main character has a lot of vulnerability. I can understand why she loved it. It's a must buy for a young girl.
