Book Overview

From two heavy-hitters in children's literature comes a critically acclaimed biographical novel of cultural icon Muhammad Ali.
*This utterly delightful story about Ali's childhood is a smash hit. --School Library Journal (starred review)
Five starred reviews
Before he was a household name, Cassius Clay was a kid with struggles like any other. Kwame Alexander and James Patterson join forces to vividly depict his life up to age seventeen in both prose and verse, including his childhood friends, struggles in school, the racism he faced, and his discovery of boxing. Readers will learn about Cassius' family and neighbors in Louisville, Kentucky, and how, after a thief stole his bike, Cassius began training as an amateur boxer at age twelve. Before long, he won his first Golden Gloves bout and began his transformation into the unrivaled Muhammad Ali.
Fully authorized by and written in cooperation with the Muhammad Ali estate, and vividly brought to life by Dawud Anyabwile's dynamic artwork, Becoming Muhammad Ali captures the budding charisma and youthful personality of one of the greatest sports heroes of all time.

   Engaging, heart-warming book
I feel so inspired by the life of Muhammad Ali as captured in this awesome book of poetry and prose, Raymond said. James Patterson and Kwame Alexander are two of the game's greatest lyricists. Young readers, especially boys, will find the book relatable.

Amazing storytelling!!! Verse, prose, & illustrations!
This biography told in verse and with great prose will be well-loved by my junior high students! James Patterson and Kwame Alexander tell the story of Cassius Clay growing up in a segregated neighborhood in Louisville, and his determination to succeed.

   Great YA biography
In "Ali: The Autobiography," Alexander and Patterson put their spin on the legendary athlete. Now she has her first ever five-paragraph essay about Muhammad Ali. Key details of his life in Louisville, including his upbringing by a Baptist pastor, help explain his worldview and his lifelong commitment to acts of compassion and courage.

   Be fearless
She loved it, the show's creator and executive producer, said. It shows how to get through challenges and stand up for themselves and be courageous like Muhammad Ali. We all struggle with life challenges, Raymond said.

   Great read for all!
My 9yr old son absolutely loves it. A perfect blend of poetry and prose. Only a dozen or so years ago, Harrison would have been a teenager. Great read, Michael.

   Loved learning about Ali's childhood
A great book for kids, but I'm not a huge fan of Dr. Goin's. Very inspiring to learn about Ali's childhood, and what it was like growing up during segregation, Mr. Ali said. He saw what motivated him to greatness. The illustrations are beautiful and very cool, Mr. Booher said.

This book has my students reading!
I love when I buy a book for my fourth-grade library classroom and it becomes THE book that everyone wants to read. Only one of my fourth graders knew who Muhammad Ali was before I got this book, but after doing a book tasting it generated some major interest, the writer said. There is an actual waitlist for this book. It's a fairly easy read, it's written in verse, but a great story, too.

Great book for a young sports lover!
Muhammad Ali: The Autobiography of a Prodigious Young Man is a must-have for any sports fan. The writing transitions beautifully between prose and poetry, offering an approachable introduction to the written word for junior readers. Charming illustrations by Joseph Malloch help bring the story of Cassius Clay to life. It would be a perfect book for a parent and child to read together, or as a present for a middle schooler.
