Book Overview

(BH Piano). The definitive edition (1987) of the piano teaching classic. Includes an introduction by the composer's son Peter Bartok. In 1945 Bela Bartok described Mikrokosmos as a cycle of 153 pieces for piano written for didactic purposes, seeing them as a series of pieces in many different styles, representing a small world, or as the world of the little ones, the children. Stylistically Mikrokosmos reflects the influence of folk music on Bartok's life and the rhythms and harmonies employed create music that is as modern today as when the cycle was written. The 153 pieces making up Mikrokosmos are divided into six volumes arranged according to technical and musical difficulty. Major teaching points highlighted in Mikrokosmos 1: Unison melodies, Question and answer, Imitation and Inversion. Volume with pink covers have text in English, French, German, and Hungarian. Volume 1 Contains Nos. 1-36

A Must for the Serious Piano Student
It helps to alleviate some of the bad problems that students have by addressing the issues before technical habits develop. It also helps the student to think about music from a theoretical perspective and not to become too dependent on patterns. My students who use this series rigorously are better music readers. I love the songs in the Book 6 as well. The actual scores have nice musical fonts and are visually pleasing to the eye.

   I love this book
Great book for sight reading exercises. I have done a few exercises at the end, and there is a considerable ramp up in difficulty, but that could just be me. That's okay though, because it takes some time for Book 2 to arrive.

It is a very excellent book. It helps a lot. Everything and Technic is needed as pianist in this book. He knew that Bartok wanted the best for his son.

   Amazing!!!
You can not expect both hands to go on their own without having one first following the other. The best part about this book is that it specifies what skill you are working on and it also shows the notes without any rhythm in the top right corner, so that the pattern is easy to identify. It is incredibly intuitive! It gradually introduces changes to the left hand, so that you can play different notes on each hand.

Very useful to any piano student
My piano teacher recommended to me this book of lessons, and has been highly useful. Many of the lessons in the book are tunes. Bela Bartok wrote it for his own son, his foreword appears in the book. Even if you have played the piano for years, as I have, it is important to review the fundamentals of technique and this book or series of books will do this.

This booklet is the absolute best way to learn piano.
I only had it for a week, but with the help of this book and the advice of my piano instructor, I was able to take my skills beyond my previous ability in a week, than it took me to teach myself in six months, even with certain apps that teach you. Perhaps learning through apps and YouTube videos isn 't my learning style, but I highly recommend finding an instructor who uses this book!

   Great book
As with all these types of books, it has to fit the student's level, as it has with any of these books. This is, obviously, a book that stood the test of time and for good reasons.

   Something different for beginners
It is not easy to say what each piece is going to be and as such, the pieces are good for reading practice. When used with a metronome, best.

Fundamental new way to learning piano
This is a very good book for those who want to follow Bartok's teaching style. His lessons definitely differ from the adult piano books to regular piano beginners. Bartok makes you learn the piano in a very unique way and I think that this book does a very good job of doing that.
