Book Overview

This collection of over two hundred folk and fairy tales from all over the world is the only edition that encompasses all cultures. Arranged geographically by region--West and East Europe, British Isles, Scandinavia, and Northern Europe, Middle East, Asia, the Pacific, Africa, North America, the Carribean and West Indies, and Central and South America--and lovingly selected from the personal favorites of folklorists and writers, this book is a major anthology in its field.
Gathered together in this wide-ranging collection are familiar classics like Snow-White and Sleeping Beauty, and stories that equal them from all major cultures. Together they offer magic, adventure, laughter, reflection, vivid images, and a throng of colorful characters. More important, they offer insight into the oral traditions of different cultures and deal with universal human dilemmas that span differences of age, culture, and geography. Animal fables, proverbs, ghost stories, funny tales, and tales of enchantment provide a unique reading experience for all ages.
A category index groups the tales by plot and character, e.g., humorous, supernatural, and pourquoi tales, married couples, enchanted sweethearts, etc. Like all great literature, these tales can be read with fascination on many levels, making Best-Loved Folktales of the World a classic and enduring collection.

A wonderful book reflecting the ture diversity of humanity!
I lent a hard cover copy of this book to a family member years ago, but they never returned it to me. This old classic contains mostly short stories and I am happy to have a new copy. It is a joy to read, it covers a wide range of cultures and countries so there is something for everyone, despite the length of most of the folk- tales. Each folk- tale country has different views on daily struggles, happiness, dreams, and life in general. The different perspective is represented well in this book.

   The Best Folktales!
I bought this book for my class. I have never read so many western classics before in this anthology. There are some tales that are suitable for children. The tales are organized by location. For example, Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Western Europe, etc. There is a list of themes in the back of the book.

   wonderful book!
Fairytalesfolktales are all catagorized by where they started. The index in the back makes it easy to find what you are looking for. It is true that not all of these stories are for young children, but one of the topics in the index is for young children, which allows you to determine which stories are appropriate to read at night. You will have a great time reading through all of the fun tales before you sleep. I like this book, I read a new story every time I open it...

   A Massive Treasury
This is one of the best folk tales out there. There are stories from all over the world in this collection. I often pick this up and read a story or two.

Great collection of stories for your child's library
Some of these stories are well written and we have read a few of them. I like that the stories are grouped by region in this collection. A good addition to a child's collection of literature.

   Not very good
I haven't read the book yet. I'm not very happy with it. I noticed that the book was banged up right off the bat. I ordered a copy that I expect to be almost as good as new, but with some signs of use. There are dents in the edges and cover corners of this. Some of the pages have been colored. The coloring is in the drawings. It makes it look messy. I think someone checked the very good box to make some extra money. Good would have been a better word for this book copy.

   Great book, easy read.
A good book and easy to read. It arrived during week three after being ordered for a four- week class. I gave it to the instructor so that he could give it to a future student.
