Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

Each of the books in Nathan Hale s Hazardous Tales has elements of the strange but true and is presented in an engaging, funny format, highlighting the larger-than-life characters that pop up in real history. Big Bad Ironclad covers the history of the amazing ironclad steam warships used in the Civil War.
From the ship s inventor, who had a history of blowing things up and only 100 days to complete his project, to the mischievous William Cushing, who pranked his way through the whole war, this book is filled with surprisingly true facts and funny, brave characters that modern readers will easily relate to.
Praise for Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales: Big Bad Ironclad
Livelier than the typical history textbook but sillier than the many outstanding works on the Civil War available for young readers, this will appeal to both history buffs and graphic-novel enthusiasts.

Great Stories, Super History, Fun Reads
This series is chock-full of great stories and wonderful history, Morgenthau said. This isn't a way to trick kids into reading history, it's just good writing, accurate illustrations and a rollicking tale, he said. As author Nathan Hale says, "it's accurate and I'll add 93%." In fact, I have had fourth and fifth graders at my school devour the entire series, checking out the whole thing and then buying them for themselves. Harriet Tubman, the Underground Abductor who uncovered the slave trade, died Sunday at age 82. Can't wait for the next two books! According to Simon & Schuster, the seventh book in the series will be released in September.

I bought my son the first book in the series, "The Hazardous Tales Series," for his 8th birthday.

   Makes history fun
My son enjoyed the entire series, said Blair. Once he opened the book, he didn't want to put it down until he finished. He has even referenced the books to the point where they may be useful to him.

10 year old son loves these books!
He's read all three and LOVES them! The best part, other than voracious reading, is that he comes to me with bits of history, joked Mr. Dhaliwal. What a parent doesn't love that? I have a feeling that they are planning a big party this year, Hughes said.

   Love it
I got this from the library and also ordered copies of "One Dead Spy'' and "The Fifth Estate." My boys look at these things everyday. Great way to introduce them to American History. Nathan's new one is out in August! It's great to be back home, said Blair.

   Great graphic novel for kids!
My son has dyslexia and we have battled with reading for years. Once he had his hands on the physical copy of his first Nathan Hale's book, he couldn't get enough! He reads them over and over again, even though he can't read them all. We will continue to purchase until we have the entire set. If you have a child who is interested in history, this is the set for you.

He's reading them a second time. He knows more about American history than I do. Whether you have a princess or not, this is the book for you.
