Book Overview

Rubina has been invited to her first birthday party, and her mother, Ami, insists that she bring her little sister along. Rubina is mortified, but she can't convince Ami that you just don't bring your younger sister to your friend's party. So both girls go, and not only does Sana demand to win every game, but after the party she steals Rubina's prized party favor, a red lollipop. What's a fed-up big sister to do?

Rukhsana Khan's clever story and Sophie Blackall's irresistible illustrations make for a powerful combination in this fresh and surprising picture book.

   Forgivness and loving your sibling
I look for new picture books to read with my daughters. I was not disappointed in the book I ordered from the reviews. The illustrations are beautiful. I was touched by the story and enjoyed sharing it with my children. I agree with another reviewer who said it's a great story about forgiveness.

   Our whole family loves it!
I bought this book for my daughter when she was three years old, and it became a family favorite. Rubina is my daughter's favorite book character and she has continued to love it despite many, many reads. We' ve given copies to at least ten other little girls. Both illustrations and stories are lovely. The story depicts the challenges and responsibilities of being an older sister as well as a child of immigrant parents. The story of a family of South Asian descent is of particular interest to our family, but the book holds appeal.

   A Favorite
If you have siblings, this book is a good one to read. The main character is forced to take her annoying little sister to a birthday party and has a bad time. Her sister stealing her favor the next morning leads to an all too familiar event in many households. When the tables are turned and the little sister is invited to a birthday party, the main character shows compassion for her little sister and learns a valuable lesson. Their relationship grows because of empathizing. I have been using this text in my classroom for a long time and decided to purchase a copy. This is a good book to read to your siblings.

   Used as a Mentor Text
This was a cute way to talk about issues siblings may experience. I bought it because I wanted to use it as a mentor text to show a parallel ending as an author's craft move.

   Daughter Loves this Book
One day after school, my daughter asked for a book. She's 7 years old and she reads this book over and over again. The author did a good job.
