Book Overview

A new, definitive edition of Herman Melville's virtuosic short stories--American classics wrought with scorching fury, grim humor, and profound beauty

Though best-known for his epic masterpiece Moby-Dick, Herman Melville also left a body of short stories arguably unmatched in American fiction. In the sorrowful tragedy of Billy Budd, Sailor; the controlled rage of Benito Cereno; and the tantalizing enigma of Bartleby, the Scrivener; Melville reveals himself as a singular storyteller of tremendous range and compelling power. In these stories, Melville cuts to the heart of race, class, capitalism, and globalism in America, deftly navigating political and social issues that resonate as clearly in our time as they did in Melville's. Also including The Piazza Tales in full, this collection demonstrates why Melville stands not only among the greatest writers of the nineteenth century, but also as one of our greatest contemporaries.

This Penguin Classics edition features the Reading Text of Billy Budd, Sailor, as edited from a genetic study of the manuscript by Harrison Hayford and Merton M. Sealts, Jr., and the authoritative Northwestern-Newberry text of The Piazza Tales.

For more than sixty-five years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the Read More chevron_right

   Not beginner Friendly & Good
I read this book when I was a freshman and felt like the writing was not easy to understand, so I had to read it 3 times to finally understand it. But aside, I learned a lot from it, so I can not complain, just wish it had been easier. Regardless, thanks.
All of the Melville that isn't Moby-Dick
You get everything that Melville needs in this volume. Billy Budd, Benito Cereno and Bartleby, among others. I love this issue and Melville proves in its passages one of our best writers.
some of Melville's lesser known works
Worth reading for a boarder understanding of the author of Moby Dick. Good-bound penguin product is well bound.
   Good Melville Selections
The text was beautiful, with a legible introduction and notes. I took Bartleby the Scrivener to my book group and appreciated the insights gained from reading and discussing.
Melville's crucial late work, in a very fine edition, with important intro!
Contains Benito Cereno among the other stories, thus including perhaps the two works of Melville most in the minds of contemporary scholars on gender studies, ethnic studies, queer studies, etc. But mostly what is amazing writing!
   Had to read for school
It was extremely difficult for me to pass for the class. The way this one was written is very difficult to understand, had to go back and read it three times before I got fed up and just rented the movie.
