   Excellent book for aspiring and established authors
A good book for aspiring and established authors. The author breaks every detail down to the bare bones and explains how to bring a character alive by studying real people anywhere and everywhere. Study their facial features. Don't tell book for your writer's tool chest is an easy to follow show. I love it. I get new information from certain passages when I read them again. I have been working on my first book for five years. My agents said my writiing has improved since I read this book. This book is wonderful, I can't say enough about it.

   Strongly recommended for an aspiring writer
I enjoyed every word of this book, but I don't say that much. It is in itself a model to which to aspire, because of the humor, experience, and honesty that it is written. It contains all aspects of writing that a new or more expert writer may be interested in. Writing groups, writer's block and more are topics. Anne is a writer. Some of her experiences are less flattering than others. I am sorry the book ended, but I have learned a lot about the craft of writing. If I write because I love it, that is a good reason to do so. Thank you for the encouragement!

   What can I say? It's Anne Lamott.
I love Anne. Her books are like little owner's manual and I consider her my higher power. I read Bird by Bird a long time ago and wanted to read it again. It's a great book for writers and a great book about life. One of my favorite Anne Lamott quotes is contained in this book. Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come. You wait and watch and work. Amen, Anne. Amen. Thanks so much for your inspiration.

   Enjoyable & informative read
This is the author's first book. The internet brought me to Bird by Bird because I wanted to learn about stories. I think there were other choices. I'm glad I read it. It was informative and enjoyable.

   Funny. Forthright. Tender. Snarky. Wonderful.
Excellent. It's funny. Forth right. There is a tender. It was so boring. It is wonderful. This is the only craft advice book I have read that stands out. The advice is well written and well explained. She is like a mentor to her writing. She writes well. She writes in a way that makes her feel like a friend. So good. It's a good idea to recommend it.

   Anne lets have coffee sometime!
This is a book that is very inspiring and relevant to the challenges of writing. I appreciated her humor in many ways. I can see this being a book that I will read over and over again when I need a bit of inspiration. She wrote a book that I am very thankful for.

   Witty and refreshingly honest
I read the 1 star reviews before I finished the book to find out how other readers felt about Anne. I enjoyed reading this book. It is witty, doesn't promise big things, and doesn't offer assurances about a successful career as a writer. She states in the book that you have to write your own truth. I applaud her for sharing her writing experiences for people like me who are not aspiring writers but who are curious about writing.

   I laughed & cried, sometimes at the same time.
I read this book at a low point in my life, in my twenties. After reading it, I felt like I was embracing my best self. She knew exactly what was happening in my life when I cried on the train. The greatest gift in writing is to enrich the lives of those who read our work. She has helped me get back on plan, working hard to make time for the right things, while having more moral courage to push out toxic people. It's been a long time since I've been grateful.

   Excellent, excellent
The book was excellent and precious. This is a classic! Instructive, thoughtful, humorous, personal and inspiring. I am amazed that the author was able to give an aspiring writer confidence to proceed with their work. I think the reader will love this book and the author for her care in its production.
