Book Overview

A child reflects on the meaning of being Black in this moving and powerful anthem about a people, a culture, a history, and a legacy that lives on.

Red is a rainbow color.
Green sits next to blue.
Yellow, orange, violet, indigo,
They are rainbow colors, too, but

My color is black . . .
And there's no BLACK in rainbows.

From the wheels of a bicycle to the robe on Thurgood Marshall's back, Black surrounds our lives. It is a color to simply describe some of our favorite things, but it also evokes a deeper sentiment about the incredible people who helped change the world and a community that continues to grow and thrive.

Stunningly illustrated by Caldecott Honoree and Coretta Scott King Award winner Ekua Holmes, Black Is a Rainbow Color is a sweeping celebration told through debut author Angela Joy's rhythmically captivating and unforgettable words.

   Great Book!
Get this book just in time! You won 't be disappointed! It is one of the best children's books I purchased for my daughter.
   Story of Power
I enjoyed that this book taught me the power and legacy of being black on a level that my children could understand.
   The gift
It is an amazing book for young children. When the twins opened this gift, one gasped and the other yelled my mommy. I wrote a small note for them and their mother, I may not always be in their lives, but this book will travel with them.
This book was more like a poem 💜
I haven 't yet given this book to my daughter. It will be one of her Christmas books in 2020. I have read, however, over it and I like it. This book is not literally about rainbows, but it is more symbolic of our culture and what our people have done for us. #BLM #BLM
   Beautiful book!
This is a book that is very rich in black history and beautiful art. I read it with second graders to practice visualization and expose them to a culture other than their own. The illustrations draw the kids in. It is also a great introduction to non-rhyming poetry. At the end of the book there are more details about black history, so if you miss any of the references in the poetry it is explained at the end. I didn 't go through all that with my students because they are so young, they need little bits of information at a time.
I approve of this book so much , Great for Afro-decent children
It is a gift for my glam-daughter, and I always give children and children friends educational or cultural books. I look at the book :
   Beautiful, poignant, colorful.
i literally cried '' while reading this aloud to my YouTube channel. It was absolutely beautiful, thank you for such a beautiful work of art.
"Black is a color and a culture."
I sincerely thank and appreciate the author for writing this book. This statement resonated with me and is a great way to respond to children when they say we are black, not brown, just as my own daughter has. It offers a great opportunity to discuss important African-American individuals. I bought a copy for my job and will purchase a copy for my daughter.
Black is a rainbow color, an excellent book, a visual masterpiece. Poetry and bold colors are pleasing to the eyes and ears.
Black is a rainbow color, a delightful overview of black culture and history through the eyes of a child. The lyrical text takes the listener and reader on an exciting journey of discovery, while the bright, multilayered illustrations add depth and dimension to the words. This is much more than a picture book ; the author provides resources for parents, caregivers, and teachers. Included are background on numerous phrases and references within historical events, poetry and music. These additions promote a broader understanding and allow for more exploration.
