A Timeless Classic of Chicano Literature

A book to read, ponder and wonder. The tug of war that occurs in me between the teaching of the Catholic Church and the folk wisdom of a native shaman is captured beautifully in the film. The book deals with another age and is out of date in the modern world. Its issues of faith and custom are depicted in very human characters and their very human dilemmas still ring true. Blending narrative with magic and dreams can be problematic for some people. They were illuminating and moving. When I finished the last page of the book, I returned to the first page and began reading again. This is a very good keeper.

The setting and imagery are very well conveyed. I spend a lot of time in the SW and this seems like being there. The novel is a coming of age one as we follow the character through his trials. The main themes of Navajo witchcraft and spirituality are included in the mystical doings of Ultima. She is a good witch and guardian angel. If you' re into mysticism, you' ll love this. This is also for those who love the roots of NM.

The book club is looking at books that were banned. It was banned in four states, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and California. It was written when Chicano studies were happening. This was a must read. The story is told from the point of view of a young boy, Antonio, who has a family in the old castle. She uses herbs to cure. The book was banned because of the swearing of Antonio and his classmates. It was banned because it might cause unrest among young Latinos. It was considered un- American by some places. The story takes place in New Mexico in the 1940s.

My favorite book is Bless Me, Ultima. I already have a hard copy of the book, but I bought the kindle version so I can read it whenever I want, in the middle of the night, travelling or just hanging out in the desert. I enjoy the pace, the language, and the setting. Arizona and New Mexico are very special places that are rapidly losing their distinctiveness. Old New Mexico is here.

I liked this book. It is an authentic presentation of a young LatinoChicano mind and soul, as well as a well- written piece of literature. I came away from it with a teary, slightly choked- up sense of gratitude because it was included in the story. It was an honor to know these people, who were so sweet, gentle and full of love, fun and spirituality, that they were like family to me. This book gives a rare glimpse into their world. Powerful story.

The powerful narrative contained in this book is very moving. Its place among the best works of fiction in the late twentieth century is well deserved. Antonio is followed through his coming- of- age story. The chaos of adolescence was framed by ancient mysticism. We join him in facing mortality, the loss of innocence, and the mystery of faith. If you allow yourself, you will feel like it happened to you. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.
