I bought this book for my 3rd grade daughter, but it did not turn out to be a good pick on my part. The book is written by the POV of a 3rd grade girl, but the content is far too sophisticated and beyond the maturity of an 8-year-old. The new character is concerned about popularity and fitting in at her main school. She refers to her pet as extra-super-spoiled and wears a diamond collar. It is perhaps its exposure to youth, but I have not seen such adult mindsets in children in my community. This book would be better suited for a preteen or a junior high student, but not for 8 year olds.

   We NEED more books like this
My daughter fell in love with the main character Ruby. She was completely ruined and she didn 't put it down until she finished it. I was so happy that she found a series that she liked that I tried to get all the Ruby books of this author. I am disappointed to say that the author has had a terrible time getting these books published in print or at all. I bought what I could and will keep on the look out for more.

She has also beautiful brown skin and we are looking for books with main characters that are like her. We took a chance on this series and loves it. Ruby is sassy, independent and funny-we have already ordered Book #2!

She really liked the character and was able to relate to it. It might have been a little above her reading level, but she pushed through and learned new words on the way. Overall, a great book for young African-American girls becoming independent readers.
