Great storytelling

Brian is a wonderful character who has been changed by his survival of the crash. We are given a chance to experience the woods from his perspective. The crash and nature's harsh lessons that followed made him rethink his attitude towards learning, civilization and independence. He taught us in a calm voice about wildlife, despite the dangers he has to face in this saga. Brian is to be commended for his knowledge and Paulsen's mature handling of life and death issues. This book was a pleasure to read because its vocabulary was challenging and appropriately descriptive for teen readers, and satisfying for adults.

I have read the 5th books in this series and enjoyed reading them with my first grader. This book is not a classic one. Of the way through it, it DESCRIBES a BEAR Mauling in DETAIL and killing a family. Descriptions that give nightmares!

Loved this book

We finish this book over the summer. I read Hatchet only before this and I read it as a child and then again as an adult. I wish I could read more about Brian. They wanted to survive him. In my opinion, this book shows the “ coming of age †of Brian and the end of his childhood. The change between him and the first book to this is immense! It is a great tool to teach dynamic characters in novels. I love it and I wish there was more to read!

Motivational

My 10 year old son turned the entire set as quickly as he read the pages. Then the entire family regaled with daring feats of strength and determination from the books every night at the dinner table. Those interactions were in the series alone worth the price of each book.

Short but not satisfying
Derived From Web , Jun 1, 2019
I read The Hatchet when I was a little kid and led the river and Brian's winter later in the high school. I'm 32 and after reading the full series again, I gotta say, I am not sure who became Brian. He seemed to spend as much time in the nature around him as he did in the developed world. It can be seen as a balance, but it felt sour to me. He changed from a boy who had learned true gratitude in existence and the purity of nature to a young man who wanted to disassociate himself from everyone he considered sick ''. That said, I enjoyed all the books and respect the decisions Paulsen made for Brian. His triumph over the bear felt meaningful even if we never fully experienced the bond he developed with David and Anne's family.

Another Great Brian Book For You To Read!
Derived From Web , Mar 2, 2018
I love Brian's books. Gary Paulsen is a great author and his brain books are a prime example of this. Each book puts me right there in the wilderness and I feel like I'm surviving out there. They take me back to the days when I spent a lot of time out there and remind me of what it is like. Though they are fiction, they could be almost real.

My 9 year old LOVED Hatchet so we bought him all the books by ...
Derived From Web , Jul 31, 2017
He says they all seem to follow the same literary formula in different settings -- winter, an island, etc., but he loves the outdoors and adventure books, so he enjoys them despite their slight predictability.
