Book Overview

The critically acclaimed singer-songwriter, producer, and five-time Grammy winner opens up about a life shaped by music in this candid, heartfelt, and intimate story.

One of the great memoirs of our time . . . a gift from Brandi's soul.--Glennon Doyle - Brandi's story is about perseverance, humor, forgiveness, and manifestation. I absolutely loved it.--Elton John - Broken Horses led me right into Brandi's heart, and my own.--Bren Brown

Brandi Carlile was born into a musically gifted, impoverished family on the outskirts of Seattle and grew up in a constant state of change, moving from house to house, trailer to trailer, fourteen times in as many years. Though imperfect in every way, her dysfunctional childhood was as beautiful as it was strange, and as nurturing as it was difficult. At the age of five, Brandi contracted bacterial meningitis, which almost took her life, leaving an indelible mark on her formative years and altering her journey into young adulthood.

As an openly gay teenager, Brandi grappled with the tension between her sexuality and her faith when her pastor publicly refused to baptize her on the day of the ceremony. Shockingly, her small town rallied around Brandi in support and set her on a path to salvation where the rest of the misfits and rejects find it: through twisted, joyful, weird, and wonderful music.

Paul McCartney is willing to share all the material. humility while doing so. Brandi credits Taylor with saving her life.

The best piece of beautiful, raw, imperfect humanity I have read in my adult life.
It's raw, imperfect and absolutely amazing.

   Very Interesting Read!
This was a great book, moved very fast through the book, said Dr. Goin. This book is so easy to read, even if you're not a fan of the show.

Broken Horses - an Amazing Memoir
What an amazing memoir! I didn't even know there was a Brandi Carlile until I saw her singing The Joke on America's Got Talent. I wonder what inspired the music? Like her songs, Brandi's memoir unabashedly reflects her humanity and tells "how I got to where I am." If she was my neighbor, I'd invite her over for coffee so we could talk longer. If you have ever wondered who Brandi is and where the songs came from, this book is for you.

   A can’t miss book!!
What a great read, said Cara Quinn, assistant professor of English at George Washington University. You know Brandi's story, from the time she was a kid to the time she was a teenager. This is by far the best book I have ever read. A total of 19 children, aged 5 to 17, were killed in the attack.

   Worth the lost sleep!
Brandi burst into my consciousness with the premier of the High Women and release of If She Ever Leaves Me. I've consumed as much of her music and media since, so preordering the book was a no-brainier. It was a total surprise to me, staying up reading each night until I fell asleep with the pages open on the cover was not expected. It was a struggle to get to sleep, but I had to force myself to go to sleep a couple of nights as I was engrossed. The entire book feels like one big conversation where you're just invited into her life, a verbose back stage all-access pass. I could go on but I'll just end with saying this is the best memoir I've ever read and the world most definitely is a better place for her light shining in it.

This book is about all of us
Her level of self-awareness and radical honesty allows her to tell all of our story, Levine said. This is what it is, and what it could be, Tunick said. It's beautiful, Tunick said. I'm so happy she wrote this book, and I can't wait to share it with my kids who will be better, more actualized people because of her words, Raymond said. What a glorious read!

great memoir , not a real horse book
I've read every book except for this one. horses may get scared and spook, and because of their size they don't KILL anything they just happen to be large. Even though Blair said people are dangerous, he said the government would not hesitate to use force. Horses are HERBIVORES, are natural fearful not dangerous, Bordelon said.
