Build a Canoe with a Master Maine Guide After supervising the construction of more than 500 canoes during his nearly 30 years as an outdoor resources instructor in the Skowhegan, Maine, school system, Gil Gilpatrick shares his voice of experience in guiding both novice and accomplished woodworkers in building a canoe with easy step-by-step instructions. This revised and expanded 2nd edition of BUILDING A STRIP CANOE includes plans and patterns for eight well-proven designs, most of which are Gil's own adaptations, and are accompanied by more than 100 photographs and illustrations. Also included are directions for making handwoven cane seats and attractive lightweight, stalwart paddles. Over many years of experimenting and refining his methods, Gil offers an extensive listing of sources for lumber, tools and supplies. His contemporary construction methods augment the traditional wood strips with fiberglass and WEST SYSTEM epoxy. From safety in the boat shop to repairs, Gil explains the shortcuts learned from experience. A Maine Guide, he uses his own canoes and tests their performance on the challenging Allagash River every summer.

Gil Gilpatrick is the best!
Derived From Web , Jun 3, 2022
Gilpatrick is the name for building a strip canoe. His extensive practical experience in working with people building these canoes, as well as his love of using this equipment in his home state. The book is well written, easy to follow, and well illustrated. The new edition is well worth the price, I have an older one as well, but use this one exclusively. In addition, it is possible to contact the author through his website and ask questions if you have any during the construction process. I have done so and found him to be responsive, humble, kind, generous and helpful. A true craftsman with a deep love for his craft, he seems to share thouroughly with others.

Plans are poorly done.
Derived From Web , Jan 15, 2022
Very disappointed ''. The only reason I bought this book is plans. Painstakingly printed on both sides of the sheet, had to transfer to graphite paper then to 14 ply to get a decent template to make my forms. The book has no value unless you like old pictures of a man and his wife smiling to the camera.

This book really helped us!
Derived From Web , Dec 7, 2021
In this book, Gilpatrick does a good job with simple explanations and helpful photos. His experience has been to teach high school students of a moderate skill level, so that the way he presents it really appeals to me - I have a skill and experience of a high school kid. The final result for my first won 't be perfect, but it has been fun and still looks pretty good! Our canoe is sailing nicely, and I think we’ll do a second one next winter!

Very well written guide (plus full scale plans) for canoe construction
Derived From Web , May 27, 2020
I give it 5 stars and have not started building. It is very well explanatory, plus very well written photos. I have never built a boat, and there are challenges on the way, but this book gives me confidence that I can build a beautiful strip of wood canoe. I replied with a couple of questions and he emailed him ASAP. A few suggestions : The Irwin clamps called in Gil's book work great, but I've found that the Irwin clamp works in any clamping situation great. Also try backpacking straps to hold down strips you need to bend and hold in place with other strips. These final thoughts were written about six months after my first entry above. Since then, Gilpatrick's email address has been shut down.

Building a canoe from this info. source
Derived From Web , Feb 4, 2020
This is an excellent source of all the information one needs to build their own strip canoe. I always wanted to do this. As well, having the tools is important. This takes time and more money than buying a canoe. If you are okay with all that, you are probably not. Then this book is all one needs to get it done. With plans plus step by step explanations. I started with caning and making paddles to prove my resolve and abilities. Before committing yourself to the real expense, epoxy is not cheap. I have my seats done with caning and my yoke, also two paddles. It is now time for the canoe.

Enjoy learning from this book
Derived From Web , Jan 18, 2020
Until now, only several chapters into this book, but it is really interesting and seems to cover all the bases in describing all the activities involved in building a kayak. The writer is easy to understand and there are a lot of photos and graphics to further my understanding of the work that is required in each step. I would recommend this book to anyone thinking about attempting this project.

Good source
Derived From Web , Jul 10, 2019
I found the information to be excellent and a good place to start when you are trying to build your own. Downside is that the plans provided are limited in comparison to what else is out there. Besides this one, I found several other books that make everything eatable to understand and the overall collection of blue prints and ideas and suggestions made it perfect!
