Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

It is another hot day in the desert. Birds and other animals scurry about looking for food. When they get tired they stop to rest at a giant cactus. It is their hotel in the desert

Many different animals live in the cactus hotel. It protects them; and they protect it, by eating the pests that could harm the cactus.

The cactus grows larger and larger and will live for about two hundred years. When one animal moves out, another moves in. There is never a vacancy in the cactus hotel.

This story--about a desert, a giant cactus, and the animals who live in it--is one that even the youngest child will understand and enjoy.

   Amazing
Who would have thought that a book could be written about a single plant and so fascinating? This is one of those books that I read as a child to never forget. I feel lucky as someone who grew up in Arizona around these Saguaros. How the seed survives, the many different creatures that live and protect the cactus, the land creatures that use it after it has fallen HUNDREDS many years later. It is sometimes easy to forget just how long it takes them to grow and how amazing they are, a small ecosystem in themselves and how they are able to survive in what can be a harsh climate.

   First graders loved this book!
This is a great book for the teaching of relationships in science! My students learned more about the topic from this book than their textbooks. There are also tons of online resources that go along with this story.

   A southwestern classic
I carried this book in our bookstore and became one of our best sellers. It describes the full life of the Saguaro cactus, from seed to long growth, until collapses. Along the way, creatures use the cactus for their homes or for food. This book shows children how important a plant is to animals. Beautiful illustrations by Robert E. Hoffman.

   Strangely moving
I was surprised when my 4-year-old daughter took interest in this book. It is written and illustrated beautifully. I agree with the reviewer who thinks that this authorillustrator team should do a series of books about various ecosystems!

Beautifully written by Stephen J. Berg. This is a wonderful story and the children were enthralled. It is a science book that reads like the best picture book. Recommendation is highly recommended.

   I love the "cactus hotel"
The Cactus Hotel is a wonderful place to stay. A few years ago, I read it to my son first and now he is 9 and still loves it as much as I do. It is a great story of nature in the desert, a place seemingly lacking in life, but quite the opposite.

   The Cactus Hotel
I live in the Sonoran desert of Arizona, where the amazing Saguaro cactus grows. I bought one of the Cactus Hotel big books to give to a preschool and 5 of the smaller books to send and give to children who visit me. Both children and adults love the beautiful illustrations and the story behind the book. I am sure that I will buy more of these books.

My three and five year old love this book. It has been a great introduction to our unit in the Sonoran desert. Very educative, but also engaging with beautiful illustrations.
