Book Overview

California tenants: Protect your legal rights

Can you be turned down because you have kids or are a student--or are over age 60 or have a pet? Did you find a termination or late rent notice on the front door? Need to respond to an eviction lawsuit, or break a lease?

You'll find plain-English help here. California Tenants' Rights also helps you with roommates who don't pull their weight, disruptive neighbors, landlords who don't know (or won't follow) state laws, and local rent control ordinances. This book provides all the information and key forms you need to:

  • understand and negotiate a lease
  • fight discrimination
  • get the landlord to make repairs
  • deal with a landlord who invades your privacy
  • break a lease with minimum fall-out
  • get your security deposit back
  • fight an eviction
  • deal with health hazards: bedbugs, mold, lead, and more, and
  • know your options if your rental gets foreclosed.
Renters have relied on California Tenants' Rights for nearly 35 years. The 20th edition is completely updated to cover strategies for fighting an eviction in court, with line-by-line instructions on completing the required forms. The book also includes detailed information on local rent control ordinances, and advice on tenant rights to sublet space through Airbnb and other short-term rental services.

Good book for studying for a state exam!
I bought this book for my daughter to study for the exam. I taught real estate for a while. I looked for a book that was up to date with state requirements. A student can study at home because of Covid-19 laws.
This book was empowering. The book helped me understand my rights as a tenant. Knowledge is power!
This is a must for renters
I was amazed at the way my landlord was treating me. If you are a tenant in California, get this book. I can't believe how much I have learned.
   NOLO is the best!!
It's very helpful for us with animals. Law is clear about them. A business law professor said to always go to NOLO for accurate information.
   Best Book Ever!
This book helped me find out the rental laws in California. I was able to take on my landlord by following the steps in the book. I would recommend anyone to get details on their renter's rights.
If You're a CA College Student, or Parent of a Student: You Need This Book!
I wish I had read this book before I moved. While the author spends a lot of time explaining how to fight eviction proceedings, they do a great job outlining how to find an apartment. The book gave me more confidence to confront my terrible leasing office about their bad behaviors, and it reminded me that I have the power to negotiate with my landlord prior to signing a lease. The sample lettersemails are very helpful. They give you a template that is professional and friendly. Nolo has done it before with a book. If you' re going to college, in college, or a college student's parent, then please help yourself with the headaches that is renting in a CA college town. Know your rights and the law at the same time.
In light of the current housing shortage in California, it's important to have a guide to protect your rights.
A helpful book for all renters
The book tells me everything I need to know. Even if you don't have a problem with your land lord. Anyone that rents should get this book.
