Footnotes are full of spoilers
Derived From Web , Feb 17, 2021
Central Spoiler. The footnotes give so much before the story even starts. The book was ruined completely. This edited copy is already familiar for those who are familiar with the story. But, man, I read a footnote and felt that I knew something that I shouldn 't have.

As a lesbian, I can find Carmilla a hard story to deal with. Certainly, Le Fanu was homophobic, and warned women of turning their affections towards other women and no longer allowing men in our lives. The reclamation of Carmilla, however, as a disabled POC - vampire is so powerful. Machado makes the annotations that I wish I could have taken in previous English literature classes, and with the illustrations I am absolutely fascinated by the world of Carmilla and Laura.
