In the novel that introduced James Bond to the world, Ian Fleming's agent 007 is dispatched to a French casino in Royale-les-Eaux. His mission? Bankrupt a ruthless Russian agent who's been on a bad luck streak at the baccarat table.
One of SMERSH's most deadly operatives, the man known only as Le Chiffre, has been a prime target of the British Secret Service for years. If Bond can wipe out his bankroll, Le Chiffre will likely be retired by his paymasters in Moscow. But what if the cards won't cooperate? After a brutal night at the gaming tables, Bond soon finds himself dodging would-be assassins, fighting off brutal torturers, and going all-in to save the life of his beautiful female counterpart, Vesper Lynd.
Taut, tense, and effortlessly stylish, Ian Fleming's inaugural James Bond adventure has all the hallmarks that made the series a touchstone for a generation of readers.
The text in this edition has been restored by the Fleming family company Ian Fleming Publications, to reflect the work as it was originally published.

Good Read for Bond Fans
Derived From Web , May 4, 2022
If you are a James Bond fan, you will enjoy this book. Having been a James Bond movie fan as a kid, I took the opportunity of the 50th anniversary to read the books. Bond's first big break was in Casino Royale. It was a very entertaining read, said Dr. Goin. There are a lot of differences between the books and the movies, and subtle and not so subtle differences with James Bond himself, but both are entertaining. If you are a Bond fan, this is a must read.

... the original Bond novels it is Fleming at his best and freshest
Derived From Web , May 4, 2022
As one of the original Bond novels, ''The Fifth Estate'' stands in a class by itself. I particularly like the detail provided in the book that sets up a firm foundation for the exotic lifestyle and adventures that James Bond would come to symbolize, says Neal Purvis. Because the film is based on Fleming's wartime experience I don't see the sexual component in the way the films play out. I see a crafty, intelligent and courageous character built upon the real courage of ordinary soldiers at war, he said. It feels like you're sitting next to the author as he decides what will come next.

A different look at Bond
Derived From Web , Dec 21, 2021
The original story was told with such richness and texture that it stands in a class by itself. That's what I'm here for. His voice is so big, one might say a Fleming fan.

Taut, kinetic, terrifyingly misogynistic
Derived From Web , Aug 22, 2020
His Majesty's Service launched the 007 franchise to great fanfare in the mid-1960s. The book is a generous volume of prose, but the central character lacks the innate charisma of Sean Connery or Roger Moore. It's a quick read, witty and has some great one-line quips. It is also a window into the uncomfortable worldview of the aesthete. In this volume, our protagonist trumpets misogynistic chestnuts about weak women and ends with a brutal Bond blaming a slim inconstancy for his inability to see the story. It is inevitable that a 60 year old pulp novel would be out of step with our times, but suffice to say that it's archaic viewpoint colors the whole reading experience.

This was the first book in the James Bond series

I really like the story of how he was, why he was James Bond. I'd say that Harrison is probably the best writer of the book. This was the second time I had read it.

Story is good enough, but wow is it hard to read
Derived From Web , Mar 1, 2018
Bond's first book was a total disaster, and I'm still struggling to get through it. Even with the introduction of the second child, the story is good enough, but it is hard to read. I want to read one of the later books to see how it compares, Mr. Rule told the judge.

Great Read
Derived From Web , Jan 25, 2018
The book is in good condition, Reichert said. As a Bond fan, I was excited to read this. It's how they said the reason why this was not the first movie was because it was too gritty. By today's standards, the movie was definitely more gritty than the book. Loved it, said Blair.

Simplify version of the movie.

Vasper's body was found July 25, and his cause of death was drowning. Bond girl Elizabeth Taylor, 21, has a crush on James Bond. This is one of those times where the movie was better.
