Book Overview

Artists, illustrators, designers, and craftspeople in search of exceptionally bold and inventive motifs will find them in this versatile treasury brimming with 125 royalty-free designs. Taken from authentic Celtic and Old Norse sources, they include an amazing array of birds, human figures, and mythological creatures, all ingeniously woven into an intricate network of spirals and interlacings.
Meticulously adapted from artwork that graced ancient rune stones and religious symbols, furniture, manuscripts, bronze mirrors, sword hilts, cooking utensils, and other artifacts, the illustrations depict a crucifix; decorative creatures that adorned the pages of the Lindisfarne Gospels; interwoven designs from stone crosses of Ireland, Scotland, and Cornwall; and many other designs and motifs.
Convenient and inexpensive, this collection offers inspiration and a wealth of immediately usable dramatic ornamentation rich in character and distinctive in content.

I bought this book to use the patterns for woodcarving, as it was in the Amazon Woodcarving section. The short version is that it is very short and the drawings are not particularly useful for woodcarving.
   Elegant knots
This book is good if a person is wanting to add some patterns that will add a fancy look to objects that have a normally simple shape, such as clothing, furniture or fantasy weapons even buildings. If someone wants to learn how to reproduce the knots, it doesn't have steps, but most line work matches the tails, so you would start with your finger to see the curves or angular shape. Some knots don't have rules such as using only circles and waves because a few have half circles and squares. The more familiar type is the triangles, which can become any combination the artist wants. From the book summary, I would say that despite the knots drawn from relics, it does not have to be placed on crosses or altar tools. It is therefore basic for reference, but a person needs nice understanding for teaching.
The pages look like a coloring book for children. The worst part is that symbols have no information leading to meaning.
   Exactly what I wanted.
Great book for tracing Celtic patterns on projects such as wood - burning or other wood products as well as helping to design independent art based on a picture.
   Celtic book with pictures
A lot of these designs I have never seen I was going to try something with wood burning, but I had never seen these ones I was looking for a more I guess more for the person that's really looking into detail and don 't mind doing a big project.
