Theoretically, the actor ought to be more sound in mind and body than other people, since he learns to understand the psychological problems of human beings when putting his own passions, his loves, fears, and rages to work in the service of the characters he plays. He will learn to face himself, to hide nothing from himself -- and to do so takes an insatiable curiosity about the human condition.
from the Prologue
Uta Hagen, one of the world's most renowned stage actresses, has also taught acting for more than forty years at the HB Studio in New York. Her first book, Respect for Acting, published in 1973, is still in print and has sold more than 150,000 copies. She raises the issue of the actor's goals and examines the specifics of the actor's techniques. She goes on to consider the actor's relationship to the physical and psychological senses. There is a brilliantly conceived section on the animation of the body and mind, of listening and talking, and the concept of expectation.

Interesting Read, But a little too much

I thought it was a good book to read for anyone who wants to pursue acting. I also thought that a lot of parts could easily be skipped, for example, a ton of name dropping, it makes it difficult to keep track of who, when and what she is talking about. I think that she could have better summarized concepts and made it easier to go through.

A staple of modern acting technique, this book is not intended to be read simply, but should be used in conjunction with real world training. The author provides exercises that should be refined over time and practiced. I advise anyone who expects to read this over a weekend. It is a book that should be read over the course of one's career.

A True Challenge!
Derived From Web , May 24, 2022
Ms Hagen's personal history of the American theater alone is worth the price and her very engrossing insights into character development are fascinating. The part of the book dedicated to the development of physical and emotional craft is powerful with exercises designed to develop a range of acting actions. This is a great handbook for both the novice and the experienced actor with its themes of authenticity, concentration and hard work.

A must read for every actor
Derived From Web , May 24, 2022
This is one of the best books out there for teaching acting and Uta is the person to teach it to you. I was fortunate enough to study in Los Angeles under Howard Fine, and this is his most important literature. There are lessons you can follow, and her style of teaching is easy to learn, and any will get anyone interested in acting on their way.
