Book Overview

In Chibi Art Class, renowned anime artist Yoai teaches you the art of chibi, step by adorable step.

Chibi is Japanese slang for short, and chibis are mini versions of Japanese anime and manga characters defined by their large heads and tiny bodies, both of which contribute to their kawaii, or cuteness, factor. Now, you too can learn to draw these adorable doll-like characters.

Here, you'll learn how to create chibis' signature bodies, facial features, and props, including dreamy eyes, fun clothes and shoes, vibrant hair, colorful accessories, and lively backgrounds. You'll also learn how to color and shade your vertically challenged characters for optimal cuteness.

This book also features:

  • 19 tutorials with simple step-by-step illustrations and instructions for drawing chibis, including a chibi character for every month of the year as well as adorable chibi beasties
  • An inspiration gallery with ideas for eyes, hairstyles, clothing, props and accessories, and ears and tails
  • Blank body bases for you to start your own chibi drawings
  • Uncolored chibis for practicing coloring and shading
Thanks to this crash course, soon you will be enhancing your notebooks, stationery, artwork, and more with your own unique chibi world. Chibi Art Class is now in session

   A detail book
This book gives step by step directions on how to draw Chibi characters. The instructions are easy to follow and easy to understand.

   Worth the Investment
It provides step by step instructions in great detail. The introduction gives helpful tips to the reader before starting the drawing aspect. I would highly recommend this to the new and/or veteran artist.

   Cute book with great tips!
This is very easy to follow for children, teens and adults. Just because of the reading level, I recommend it for people over the age of ten or so. I have been in the art field for years and even found some great ideas!

Not enough detail & expects too much foreknowledge.
The information in this book assumes that you know how to draw and place features. Does not include hands or drawing chibis in higher than 2 heads high. Step-by-step instructions do not go into enough detail, not enough material on posing chibis independently from the 19 tutorials. Also, does not go exactly how to draw beasties in various forms other than the few tutorial outlines. So, nothing is left on the horn or extended ear placement or how to replicate in various positions of the heads.

   meh
If you want to use a book for learning to draw with the internet being free or at least for most part has it, there is no need for this book.

Great content. Not so great binding
I have already gotten better by practicing every day. However, the book's qiality is not as good. It started falling apart the first day I used it... I wish it was a little larger too, so that it would lay flat.

   Nice for older kids
We already had one, but my daughters kept fighting, so we bought a second one instead, since they can 't share.

Great for artists of all levels/mediums!
The book is very good. Teaches you about more than step-by-step chibis. This book mentions enough color theory to get you started and even helps you pick out your shadow colors, but can be converted to digital if you're a traditional artist, which is nice. There is an inspiration gallery that they encourage you to use, even in your own drawings. Even as an older, more experienced artist, I was able to teach new techniques and ideas. If you buy this book for children, it will teach them art techniques they can carry forever! Possibly setting them up for more than drawing Chibis!Chibis are a great stepping stone into art. The anatomy is much simpler and the cuteness factor is a huge plus! Highly recommended!

I bought this for my 11 year old daughter, who loves to draw anime characters. I '' am quite impressed. It explains spatial awareness and needed help with it.

   A Great Buy
I follow the author on Instagram so that I pre-ordered it immediately and I am so happy with it! I changed after a few sessions and I really love the reference pages of clothing, hairstyles and props.
