Book Overview

In productive classrooms, teachers don't just teach children skills: they build emotionally and relationally healthy learning communities. Teachers create intellectual environments that produce not only technically competent students, but also caring, secure, actively literate human beings.

Choice Words shows how teachers accomplish this using their most powerful teaching tool: language. Throughout, Peter Johnston provides examples of apparently ordinary words, phrases, and uses of language that are pivotal in the orchestration of the classroom. Grounded in a study by accomplished literacy teachers, the book demonstrates how the things we say (and don't say) have surprising consequences for what children learn and for who they become as literate people. Through language, children learn how to become strategic thinkers, not merely learning the literacy strategies. In addition, Johnston examines the complex learning that teachers produce in classrooms that is hard to name and thus is not recognized by tests, by policy-makers, by the general public, and often by teachers themselves, yet is vitally important.

This book will be enlightening for any teacher who wishes to be more conscious of the many ways their language helps children acquire literacy skills and view the world, their peers, and themselves in new ways.

   Must read!
The smallest changes in our language can have a huge impact on the self-esteem, motivation and growth mindset of students. I am an instructional coach and have used this book more than once in my teaching with teachers. A must read :

Works for all levels, but definitely geared towards elementary
This was bought for a grad school class. As a secondary teacher it seemed a little more generalized towards elementary students, but the general ideas of how powerful our words are at all levels.

   One word can change everything.
This is worth several reads, as I implement new things each time. I have seen a positive focus when I follow concepts in this book in my language with students.

A great book for in the classroom and in life.
This book is a really great read book. It is small, concise and to the point. For those teachers who don 't have a lot of time, this is a good book to spend time in reflective practices. What we say to our students has a powerful impact. Make sure that your words are tremendously lifting and powerful. This book also helped me to speak kinder to others outside of school, it was a great life-reminder to be gracious in our speech.

Choice Words: How Our Language Affects Children's Learning
This book really changed my thinking about how to speak to children to promote the best learning and what to say. Our words are powerful tools in the teacher's kit '' and must be used with care.

   Too many useless words
I read this book based on a review I purchased in a popular teacher journal, published by Scholastic. I was looking for a book I could quickly find and read information that would help me understand how my language affects my students. This book did provide this information for me, but I had to look for it, something I did not have the time to do. I wonder who was the marketed audience for this book? Certainly not an overnourished 4th year teacher with 26 students.

   Required Reading
I was required to read this book for my doctoral work in urban education. This book reads like a manual for elementary through junior high school art teachers-I am a secondary math teacher so that it did not work quite as well for me. As far as detailed content goes, very direct examples. A lot of picking apart the most basic phrases is simple. Felt like only using the language discussed would be condescending to high school students and afraid that saying a million variations of a good job would cause the praise to lose meaning.

   Every Teacher Must Read
An easy read, but full of great information for both new and experienced teachers. I hope that my staff will use it for a book study this fall.

   small, but not small enough
I had high expectations for this book because of Richard Allington's work with Johnston..., however, I was underwhelmed. This book could have been written on a one-sided handout containing what things teachers should say to students and a side containing what things teachers should not say to students. A simple paragraph on each page would provide more explanation than sufficient.

   Choice Words/Love & Logic
This book aligns with the philosophy of Love and Logic somewhat. I enjoyed the introduction as much as the book itself ''.
