Excellent instruction

A very good book for beginners. A while back, I decided that I wanted to learn to hand over Carve. My first piece turned out better than I thought.

Skip his book, Chris' website is much clearer.
Derived From Web , May 23, 2022
I liked this book but learning by book is slower because you have to try to imagine what he is doing based on the words and pictures. I learned some things from this book, but later discovered that Chris Pye had a subscription-based website called Woodcarving Workshops. It has hundreds of videos, which blows this book in its depth and clarity. If I could do it again, I would save my money and watch the videos on his website just for fun.

It's not much good as a course guide if the patterns aren't available
Derived From Web , May 23, 2022
It has gotten a little dated. The additional features that were available are no longer downloadable. It is not much good as a course guide if the patterns are not available. You will probably learn more by watching the numerous YouTube videos available for wood carving.

Sorely Disappointed
Derived From Web , May 23, 2022
Another customer spoke my sentiments in another review, but as for myself, as a new brand new, just thinking about woodcarving, this book is sorely lacking as a beginner's guide. I can't knock the author, he has been doing this for a long time and seems very well respected. I was really hoping for something really basic... like not only should I use each tool for certain results, but how should I use each tool? As for methodology, I could have gleaned as much as Google did from. The first thing I did after reading the book was to return to Amazon in search of another book by beginners.

Good book

Lots of different techniques, some of them better than others. I was more of a learning book with different ways of learning and practice stuff.

Old Carvers Need More Black And Less White
Derived From Web , Sep 5, 2020
An expert book by a well-written carpenter is written. I am, however, an old guy and my eyesight is not what it used to be. When I pick up this book, I have evil thoughts about a publisher that uses such a small font, leaving so much white space, either in the margins or between the lines. The book layout is very old, but very difficult to read for beautiful eyes.

weird egotistical writing, but good content
Derived From Web , Jun 12, 2019
Like many masters, the dude needs to get over himself for a bit and recognize his way isn t the only way, but if you can filter this part of the writing and approach it as one of the best in the world, it has really solid content at a good price.

A great resource for a beginner
Derived From Web , Jan 21, 2019
This book is packed with great information, pictures that do a great job of illustrating the theme at hand, and examples of beautiful, inspiring work. My only complaint is that certain parts are a little too short. I feel that the section on Sharpening holds too much information... and then encourages you to consult the author's book on the subject to find out more. Instead, I would recommend checking YouTube and his site. Although when it comes to sharpening, I highly recommend the Perfect Edge of Popular Woodworking's Edge. Carving tools are only a section in this book, but there is so much great information that workers should know.

Informative

It was a great Christmas present for someone who was just starting out. He had taken a class and this helps to support that new information while he begins this class woodworking experience.

Strange Writing Style
Derived From Web , Nov 12, 2018
The author writes in a very peculiar style. It is almost as if the author is trying to write in a poetical style regarding wood carving while also explaining the art of sculpting wood. Unfortunately, the author doesn 't pull it off. Try to find a book that is simple, straightforward, to the point and well-illustrated. I am still confused after reading this book.
