Is love worth betraying everything? Plunge into the second adventure in the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series and prepare to be hooked (Entertainment Weekly)--now with a gorgeous new cover, a map, a new foreword, and exclusive bonus content City of Ashes is a Shadowhunters novel.
Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what's normal when you're a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who's becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn't ready to let her go--especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary's only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil--and also her father.
To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings--and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?
In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures readers back into the dark grip of New York City's Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation.

   Sequel to City of Bones
This is a young adult trilogy along the lines of Hunger Games and Divergent. Although I left the category of the young adult years years ago, I still enjoy good stories with interesting characters and plots. Along the way, she finds out that she is part of the shadowhunters whose lives are spent destroying demons. On the way she meets other worldly characters. Thoroughly enjoyed the ride.
   It gets even better...
This series keeps getting better and better! I was a little disappointed that Jace and Clary are still siblings, but there are always pieces in the book that make you think twice about everything, including the characters. When you have one hooked, they do something that rocks the boat like Clary's friend Simon. What he turns into is a bit clichéd but still ties nicely with the rest of the story and is written well. Plus, you feel the poor thing needs something to help Clary attract, not to mention that he needs his own powers to help him in their adventures. The ending does leave you on the edge, so I would recommend purchasing the last installment, City of Glass, when you purchase this book. It is such an original concept with fantastic character's that it is truly a must read trilogy!
find out what clary's really made of
See exactly why Jace is her BFF and what is so special about Simon that she can 't get him out of her head, brother or not. But it has its moments. And you begin to understand the situation in which Clary found herself and just why her mother tried to hide it from her. Some family secrets are just too twisted... In this book, loyalty and determination are central.
   Another great one
However, I have yet to see the movie on these books, I read it did not do very well and imo it was not well publicized. I heard about it barely. It does have a twilight feel to it, but waaaay is better.
A nice addition to this genre
Engaging characters, an romantic plot, a romantic triangle... what is not to like? This is if you're a teenager and if you are not already tired of the many versions of this type of story. There are so many fresh, delightful and truly imaginative books out there. It is funny how fiction is just as popular as fashions and hairstyles. This book was trendy and amusing. Be aware that teenagers have adult-like sexual relationships in this series - and in this book our hero and heroine consider incest-and adults are either absent or don 't quite understand-typical fare of teenage fiction.
I was curious about the Mortal Instruments series with all the popularity it had gained, but I was also very cautious not to expect too much. It was not badly composed, but the story is difficult to write into, as it seems a little ridiculous at times. The ending is also horrendous. I bought the second book a while ago, but I don 't really feel inclined to read it. I did eventually and still feel the same way, but I also feel obligated to finish the series out. I can 't connect with this book like many others can, it's worth a shot if you're looking for something to read and you're into YA - stuff.
Didn't suck me in like the first, but good
I really enjoyed this one, although I did not get completely sucked in like I did with City of Bones - the enticing love story of the first is pretty much not present, although there are still some love-triangle elements, it is a little weird now with the sibling angle. Keep hoping it will come out that they are not blood related, as I really wanted Clary and Jace to get together! However, lots of action and it moves the Valentine plotline along well. Definitely going to keep reading the series.
   This read feels so nostalgic!
• Book Review / Title Description : The title of Ashes - Series The Mortal Instruments #2 Author Cassandra Clare Rating 45 I read this book years ago and thought that it was time for a reread. I started reading this as an ebook, but I felt like I had a hard time sorting it out somehow. I chose to listen to the Audiobook instead and feel that this was the best idea for me. I loved the book even more when I heard it somehow. The story continues and I enjoyed the action in this one ; I felt it was slightly faster than the last book. Some of my favorite scenes are in this book ; I love how they meet the Seelie Queen, and it made me feel a little nostalgic to be honest.
Gift to my 15 year old daughter
My daughter bought this book for her birthday, so I am the good father that I asked it for her!
   Things are happening!
I flit through this book and have a lot of mixed feelings about it. I landed on a 3.55 stars, but rounded it this time because it was SLIGHTLY, and I mean a little better than City of Bones for me. This book was action packed and the pacing kept me reading way later than I should have on more than one occasion. Overall, still enjoyable, a little more than the first installment, but there are still some major issues that I had to get through. I mean, let's be honest, the romance is pretty terrible here... let's hope that this changes.
