Managing employees in today's rapidly evolving workplace can sometimes feel like negotiating a minefield. Such recent new trends as flextime, telecommting, 360-degree feedback, the flattening of hierarchies, and the increased use of temps and contract workers present tough new challenges for supervisors in every field. This timely, completely revised and updated edition of Ferdinand Fournies's classic management coaching bible shows you proven ways to get workers to perform at the highest level while eliminating the self-destructive kinds of behaviors that have become increasingly prevalent in recent years.
In this book, you'll be taught specific face-to-face interventions you can use to enhance performance in every kind of workplace situation--from sales to creative brainstorming. There are also interventions uniquely suited to resolving problems ranging from low productivity to absenteeism to conflicts between individuals. You'll learn precisely what to say and do so that each person you supervise will want to give you his or her best work--even when that person was previously thought to be a problem employee. Packed with brand-new case studies from Fournies's latest research into the dynamics of the modern workplace, this classic guide takes all the guesswork out of becoming the kind of inspired, hands-on manager that every company today is looking for

   Great and practical management book
For its practicality, I love this book. Fortunately, few books actually guide you through the difficult nuance of a precise management conversation. This book has literally written it! In particular, this book sells the idea of actually directing people to add value, as opposed to assuming that they should come self-managed and firing them if they aren 't. He describes employees as people who are really interested in the firm's behavior, and that all you are renting is to manage that behavior that you are renting. No need to make it bigger than that or to try to complicate things by trying to guess what is going on in their heads. Just focus on the behavior! It is all very practical and makes sense!
   Coaching helps? You bet!
We often assume that when we hire people, they know how to perform the work we ask them to do. I learned that ten years of experience often means a year ten times. I highly recommend this book to all those who supervise people. I bought one of the first editions many years ago. I acquired the most recent addition so that I could brush up. I have seen the positive impact of coaching others and teaching others to coach others.
BEST book I have ever read about management
This has helped me see and how the disalignment occurs as well as how to address it as a manager. Like a lot of books concentrate on making sure workers feel fulfilled etc and while that is important, the plain truth is that some jobs are rote and boring, but they need to be done. This really helped me have these conversations and make sure I gave individuals every opportunity to succeed. I have a leadership degree and a minor in business and organizational studies, but I still recommend this book above anything I ever read in school.
I recommend this book all the time to help with supervision.. Buy this version.
This book is a very clear and concise method for supervising. It does really take the conflict out of supervising. A local company bought a copy for all their owners after I gave them a copy to a friend. I have found every client that I have suggested to have it help. This version has a chart that makes it very easy to learn the steps of monitoring.
   Top performance book out there
Highly recommended this to anyone who wants to teach behavior based performance skills or improve behavior based performance skills with employees.
Could have been a blog post
As with most business books, it is about 90% fluff. It has some great high level concepts but the implementation examples it gives just feel so... clinical. I can 't imagine any humans speaking like that to each other. The book feels like it's about 75% example scenarios, all of which feel so toxic and not the way people actually interact, but maybe I haven t experienced the harsh corporate cultures he is writing for? My suggestion is to read the chapter titles and section headings and you 'll be set.
   Love this book everytime
This is in one of only a few books that I have read more than twice and I love it every time. Each time I read it, I pick up something new and add it to my repetwa.
