Book Overview

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELER - This inspiring meditation on kindness from the author of Lincoln in the Bardo is based on his popular commencement address.

Three months after George Saunders gave a graduation address at Syracuse University, a transcript of that speech was posted on the website of The New York Times, where its simple, uplifting message struck a deep chord. Within days, it had been shared more than one million times. Why? Because Saunders's words tap into a desire in all of us to lead kinder, more fulfilling lives. Powerful, funny, and wise, Congratulations, by the way is an inspiring message from one of today's most influential and original writers.

Praise for Congratulations, by the way

As slender as a psalm, and as heavy.--The New York Times

The graduating college senior in your life probably just wants money. But if you want to impart some heartfelt, plainspoken wisdom in addition to a check, you can't do much better than Congratulations, by the way].--Entertainment Weekly

   READ IT!
This book really helps you see things and understand things that you should be thinking about in those tiny microseconds that pass you by. You know, all those things you think you should actually care about. Those things you should be putting your time towards, but when you are stuck in traffic or go to school or work or eat or go out, you tend to forget and place in the empty dusty storage cabinet of your mind. It speaks about kindness and what kind projects, and what it means really good things, right now, tomorrow, and when you are near the end of your mortality.

A quick read, but incredibly insightful and powerful. ...
In our society, a must read. I wished that every graduate read this book and then read it again every five years.

   Would that it could...
In a storm, it can be difficult to select so many ports. It is a disappointment for the receiver and the giver, one must first allow for the very notion of what is kind. The author angles for progression and baby steps while presenting a doable challenge. Then it was executed very nice.

It is all about message. Could argue that he should have waited until he had a whole book, but it is uplifting. Interesting way of using the illustration too.

   George Saunders on Kindness
“Congratulations, by the Way ” joins the Pantheon of Great Commencement Addresses, which include “This is Water ” by David Foster Wallace, and others by Kurt Vonnegut, Barack Obama, Bono and J. K. Rowling. Saunders'address is distinguished by his simplicity, clarity, sweetness and plain goodness. It is worth reading at least once a year, perhaps more often if you feel low or ashamed at some mean thing you did or just hoping that such kindness he talks about will become second nature to you, for others.

Price per page is a joke!
Love the author, enjoyed reading the book, but for $7.99 a real speech at a beginning that is trying to pass off as a book feels like a short rip-off! The sentiment though was quite enjoyable!

   Timely and Timeless Speech
This was my first George Saunders's first message, it offers a timely and timeless message about life and what matters, or what should matter within a well-lived life. As a Kindle version, a bit lacking as the pictures are intertwined one page at a time and not shown next to the speech. I would recommend buying it in physical form to truly feel the building of the image with the building of the speech to its climax and share the book with those around you to spread the message. I recommend December 10, as well as Tenth.
