Cultish: The Language Of Fanaticism is 320 pages long.
Fascinating!
Derived From Web , Jan 2, 2022
I loved the book! '' I have always been fascinated by cults, but was not very aware of the cultish behavior of some mainstream organizations and activities. I'm so glad the author addresses MLMs, as I have had several friends involved in them. I tried to be supportive, but they all use the same Lingo and don't just want to sell their wares, but also to cut a true pyramid scheme! I was not able to support them as much as they expected, and my friendships with them have truly suffered as a result. I was glad to see so much coverage of it in the book.

Cult classic

Okay, so I may be a little cheeky with my review title. This book was very interesting and I was really struck by the variety of groups that use the “ new †language to indoctrinate cultish members.

A fun book but lacks an index so just four stars
Derived From Web , Nov 3, 2021
This edition of the book has just been read by my local public library. It is quite readable and informative, but lacks an index, which is a BIG DEMERIT for a professionally produced book by a mainstream author and publisher.

Basic, Mildly Interesting
Derived From Web , Sep 15, 2021
This book is rife with tenuous claims and some high level research, but is also an interesting survey of pop-culture references to cults and explores what may or may not be considered “cultish†in its deliberate and often insidious use of language that the author claims is the real weapon of cults. Nothing here is ground-breaking and this reads more like a scholarly Instagram post than a quick read, but is certainly enjoyable as an object of mild interest.

So smart
Derived From Web , Sep 6, 2021
This book really explains a number of modern social phenomena that I have been suspicious and frustrated with. I really loved Montell's writing as both approachable and wildly insightful.

Book is great! I am fascinated by cults and how people get sucked in ''. Very informative and makes you think about the world we use and how it makes a difference. I would consider this to be both a fun and an enlightening read.

Leaves out important issues
Derived From Web , Aug 13, 2021
This book was kind of interesting, but very limited. It gives a short history of cults and how they have used language and other techniques to control their followers. Sadly, I was disappointed that the author said nothing about the social justice controversies in the current language movement. This would be a gold mine of language modification.

Insightful, fascinating, everyone should read this
Derived From Web , Aug 6, 2021
This is a really amazing book that illustrates the power of the language. It is very interesting to discover how the language of belonging can exist on a spectrum that eventually leads to cult-like mentalities.

Waste of money
Derived From Web , Jul 4, 2021
Save your money and save it. The author doesn 't realize that she subscribes to a cult, so her lack of personal recognition gives a book a bias that is intolerable with thought, anyone. A waste of money.

A must read book!
Derived From Web , Jun 25, 2021
Amanda Montell's Cultish is a must read for everyone, especially those in wellness, given the rise of disinformation and anti-science rhetoric over the last year. This book offers so much wisdom for the times we are in, and shines a light on how cults are much more of a reality than we realize and the types of power abuses that must be dismantled.
