A Kirkus Reviews Best Picture Book

In soaring words and stunning illustrations, Margarita Engle and Rafael L pez tell the story of Teresa Carre o, a child prodigy who played piano for Abraham Lincoln.

As a little girl, Teresa Carre o loved to let her hands dance across the beautiful keys of the piano. If she felt sad, music cheered her up, and when she was happy, the piano helped her share that joy. Soon she was writing her own songs and performing in grand cathedrals. Then a revolution in Venezuela forced her family to flee to the United States. Teresa felt lonely in this unfamiliar place, where few of the people she met spoke Spanish. Worst of all, there was fighting in her new home, too--the Civil War.

Still, Teresa kept playing, and soon she grew famous as the talented Piano Girl who could play anything from a folk song to a sonata. So famous, in fact, that President Abraham Lincoln wanted her to play at the White House Yet with the country torn apart by war, could Teresa's music bring comfort to those who needed it most?

Dancing hands give comfort and joy!
This is a well written biography about the Venezuelan child wonder Teresa Carreno. Her piano playing brought joy not only for herself, but also for many others in many countries. Abraham Lincoln, who was mourning the loss of a son, asked her to play at the White House for him. Rafael Lopez's illustrations are delicate, vibrant, and warm. They overpower the text instead of complimenting it. There are many analogys to music, nature and human feelings in the lyrics of Margarita Engle. This makes me think that the book is special. The author discusses the struggles and achievements of Teresas'life, in a clear and straightforward poetic manner, which I think is age appropriate for children 6 to 10 years of age. This is a comprehensive and beautiful book, which would do well in any library. It has certainly its place in my library at home.

During troubled times, acting with excellence can be the best practice and blessing for others. Pura Belpre's award for Dancing Hands, a prestigious gold seal, is a prestigious silver seal. I love the last line... simply by letting her fingers travel arouse all the beautiful dark and light moments of hope.

   Upside down
Our book arrived looking perfect, but when I took the book jacket off, I noticed that the pages are turned upside down to the cover. Doesn 't impair our ability to read it just a little frustrating.

   Beautiful Illustrations!
It mentions the war, death and sadness that Teresa saw and saw others suffer, but she experienced beauty in music. She saw how it could help re-live the spirits of others. So excited to share this book with my fellow students!

   Inspiring!
Not only does DANCING HANDS introduce a Venezuelan musician, but it also shows an intimate time in Abraham Lincoln's life when he mourns the death of his son while trying to abolish slavery. Poet Margarita Engle's language reaches in phrases like Hymns, clouds that bucked and kicked across the wild sky like angry mules, and notes that rose, swayed, rippled and dipped like a bird above a green forest. The illustrations by Rafael López are the perfect accompaniment for the rich language of this biography. The mixed-media illustrations use color to evoke the beauty of Venezuela, the dark despair of the United States in the war and the joy of music that flutters across the pages. This is a book that inspires everyone who reads it.
