   nice try
I listened to Eddie Muller's commentaries on various DVDs and have been excellent in general. He also seems to be an extremely nice guy. It is sometimes self-referential, which is also quite tedious. The treatment feels superficial still, and the content blends together after a while. IMHO, I think it is more suited to someone who is not that familiar with film noir.

   I need to read it again.
I plan to write this book again and have a pencil and paper ready to go through the movies for future acquisition. The reason I did not write down movies as I read it the first time is that it is chock full of information about the films and actors and background. I am a fan of odd film noir and I am not into quantity in this genre. This makes the task of choosing a movie more difficult. Shell reviewer is correct.

   Well written but slightly overrated
Eddie Muller knows what he is writing about. He is one of the best experts on film noir alive. And yes, this book is in its writing fantastic with many wonderful pictures that make it a joy to read quickly or slowly. Nevertheless, it seems disappointing on several levels : 1) There are too many plot synopses to the point that I actually had to skip a few paragraphs if it was about a noir that I had not seen. 2) The book seems to be poorly structured -- actually more like a novel at times. 3) There isn 't a single photo of Jane Greer, one of the best-known femme fatales in the book! Admittedly, it is a good book and is worth the money. But a definitive reference book is not.

   Great book about the Film Noir genre with excellent writing and illustrations.
I am a big fan of Film Noir and seeing Mr. Muller on the Noir Alley series at Turner Classic Movies. In my opinion, he is a different writer and weaves together the great parts of the genre quite well. There is a section on each part of the typical Noir film and he discusses different films and actors, actresses as well. Its illustrations are also great. Mr Muller puts you right in the film with his discussions.

It is noir on noir. The plot summaries of the movies tend to blend together, as another reviewer noted. I still like it, but sometimes you have to skip ahead.

   Atmospheric read - this book is hard to put down.
It is hard to put this book down if you love the film noir. Late in the evening, sit with a reading light in an otherwise dark room, sink into a comfortable chair and return to the dark days of film noir, to meet the shameless, shady, pathetic, but emotionally understandable characters of the dark city.
