Book Overview

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills have been demonstrated to be effective in helping adolescents manage difficult emotional situations, cope with stress, and make better decisions. From leading experts in DBT and school-based interventions, this unique manual offers the first nonclinical application of DBT skills. The book presents an innovative social-emotional learning curriculum designed to be taught at the universal level in grades 6-12. Explicit instructions for teaching the skills--mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness--are provided in 30 lesson plans, complete with numerous reproducible tools: 99 handouts, a diary card, and three student tests. The large-size format facilitates photocopying; purchasers also get access to a Web page where they can download and print the reproducible materials.

This book is in The Guilford Practical Intervention in the Schools Series, edited by Sandra M. Chafouleas.

Where are the printable handouts that are advertised?
Great book, but I am unable to find where I can get the printed handouts advertised. When printing the book in a copy machine, the pages do not print well. Otherwise, I would give this book 5 stars.

Great book for anyone who wants to use DBT with groups
This book is full of typical, useful DBT worksheets. The additional part is that there are lesson plans written clearly for those who do not run DBT groups.

   Great Resource
As a school-based counselor, I have returned to this resource time and time again. It has proven in my work to empower rural AIAN youth living in the school setting to be effective, accessible and orderly in my work.

Excellent curriculum that can be used in the classroom with all students, in small groups or individually with students who meet with their school counselors. There are important activity pages that work through numerous concepts related to learning how to develop distress tolerance and use our emotions wisely and mindfully. A tool for dysregulated student self-awareness and typical student toolbox for self-regulation.

   Fabulous!
James and Liz Mazza have done a fantastic job of bringing needed DBT skills to adolescents in schools. Kids won 't find the almost immediate measurable results that they will believe with practice. Their peers also hold them accountable for their homework. The book is set to help teachers on every step of the way! I wish this class had been around when I was trying to navigate through junior high and high school years!
