Book Overview

DEATH by Meeting

Casey McDaniel had never been so nervous in his life.
In just ten minutes, The Meeting, as it would forever be known, would begin. Casey had every reason to believe that his performance over the next two hours would determine the fate of his career, his financial future, and the company he had built from scratch.
How could my life have unraveled so quickly? he wondered.

In his latest page-turning work of business fiction, best-selling author Patrick Lencioni provides readers with another powerful and thought-provoking book, this one centered on a cure for the most painful yet underestimated problem of modern business: bad meetings. And what he suggests is both simple and revolutionary.

Casey McDaniel, the founder and CEO of Yip Software, is in the midst of a problem he created, but one he doesn't know how to solve. And he doesn't know where or whom to turn to for advice. His staff can't help him; they're as dumbfounded as he is by their torturous meetings.

Then an unlikely advisor, Will Petersen, enters Casey's world. When he proposes an unconventional, even radical, approach to solving the meeting problem, Casey is just desperate enough to listen.

As in his other books, Lencioni provides a framework for his groundbreaking model, and makes it applicable to the real world. Death by Meeting is nothing short of a blueprint for leaders who want to eliminate waste and frustration among their teams, and create environments of engagement and passion.

A pragmatic classic - should be on every manager's bookshelf
Good Housekeeping is full of good ideas and practical tips for making your meetings run smoothly and efficiently. Like most of us, he's drawn from his family's tradition of storytelling. Pauley also wrote a book, "All His Books are Worth Reading." If you're having trouble keeping in touch with your colleagues, I recommend it to anyone struggling with boring, unproductive meetings. Bad meetings stand out as one of the biggest pain points, and biggest time-wasters in organizations today, said Robert Halfon, IBM's executive vice president. Because the book is now several years old, one shortcoming is that it doesn't adequately deal with the impact of the Internet and other digital tools on communication today. It's a great read, too, except for the fact that the book is, in many ways, a parody. James Ware, Pd.D., best-selling author of Making Meetings Matter How Smart Leaders Orchestrate Powerful Conversations in the Digital Age, will be speaking at the University of Michigan's Great Lakes Chapter on Tuesday.

Good story to tell the underlying business skills
The book is more of a novel than anything else, which does a good job of building characters that you care about, only so that the author can illustrate his key points, which are further highlighted at the back of the book. His company is acquired, and told that it can remain autonomous, but only if they improve their performance, now that they are a public company. In doing so, he learns a bit about the business and how to engage co-workers, said Dr. Goin. If you want to get to the bottom of the book, you can really read the last 10 pages or so, which can be found on the author's site.

   A personal favorite
I'm not sure of anyone who readily admits to looking forward to meeting Dr. Goin's. In my experience, they are usually tedious, unfocused, long and surprised if I come away with productive feeling or energized. If you're serious about making your meetings more productive then this is a must read. The only challenge I see is getting everyone else in your company on board, he said. What have you got to lose by not using your time productively?

There are easy ways to apply concepts from the book into your own meetings. This approach makes sense, Graham said.

Essential for Any Manager or Entrepreneur
If you think about it, Death Meeting is by far one of the best business books I've ever read. Unlike many books written technically and dryly, this one clearly outlines its points and brings them to life in a credible case study.

   What a read!
It's a total waste of time and money, Michael Booher told the judge. She started reading at 8 o'clock one night, thinking it would put me to sleep. As I finish the book, I look at my clock and it is 11 a.m. If you are into business fiction or just looking to learn more about it, then this is for you. Good ideas and a fun story if you understand where the author is coming from, Hughes said. Even if you disagree with the principle, it's still a fun read.
