Book Overview

The definitive guide to the contemporary craft cocktail movement, from one of the highest-profile, most critically lauded, and influential bars in the world.

Death & Co is the most important, influential, and oft-imitated bar to emerge from the contemporary craft cocktail movement. Since its opening in 2006, Death & Co has been a must-visit destination for serious drinkers and cocktail enthusiasts, and the winner of every major industry award--including America's Best Cocktail Bar and Best Cocktail Menu at the Tales of the Cocktail convention. Boasting a supremely talented and creative bar staff--the best in the industry--Death & Co is also the birthplace of some of the modern era's most iconic drinks, such as the Oaxaca Old-Fashioned, Naked and Famous, and the Conference.

Destined to become a definitive reference on craft cocktails, Death & Co features more than 500 of the bar's most innovative and sought-after cocktails. But more than just a collection of recipes, Death & Co is also a complete cocktail education, with information on the theory and philosophy of drink making, a complete guide to buying and using spirits, and step-by-step instructions for mastering key bartending techniques. Filled with beautiful, evocative photography; illustrative charts and infographics; and colorful essays about the characters who fill the bar each night; Death & Co--like its namesake bar--is bold, elegant, and setting the pace for mixologists around the world.

Not for anyone but advanced mixologists and professionals
The book is too advanced for most of the people who are going to purchase it. The most well-equipped bars won't have many of the things they need to make the drinks, so I can appreciate the artistry and complexity of all the cocktails within them. The book is going to be very hard to read for most people, even if they know their way around a bar. If you want to make any of the cocktails in this book, you need to include things like grapefruit hopped bitters, acacia honey syrup, and chamomile infused vermouth. A nice dinner party would cost a small fortune, but you would get a few ingredients together. There are better recipes online. If you are a bar professional, a restauranteur, or a mixologly nerd, this is a great book for you to read.
   Great book!
The book was used as a prize for who made the best cocktail at the wedding.
Fascinating book, excellent coffee table book as well
A coffee table book about cocktails that was more than just walls of text and recipes was what I was looking for. This book was exactly what I was looking for. It gives the history of one of the most popular cocktail bars in New York City, as well as a day in the life at the bar, and recipes of all of their unique cocktails. The size of the book makes it an excellent coffee table book.
Good read, cocktail codex is better though
I think you would have the same impression if you bought this one after cocktail codex. Cocktail codex has a beautiful narrative of the history of the core cocktails and the importance and contribution of each component in a classic. If it isn't already, it will become a holy grail text in the bartending world with enough time. I like death and cocktail codex so I think this is a good purchase. The biggest flaw is that it is a big picture book of the history of death. It seems silly to complain that the book is about Dandc, but like any story book, it is a one and done deal. I am not compelled to pick it up and refer to it like I am with cocktail codex.
   Errors in Kindle Version
There are errors in the version of the e-book. Oaxaca Old Fashioned in both places is not the same as hardback version. Not sure if there are any other errors. I need to change the review to 5 stars.
Appreciation for the Art of the Cocktail
This is a very good book. It was enjoyable to read and look at the photos. The old classics have unique approaches and innovative twists. I have no experience behind the bar and do not have a large selection of spirits. The cocktails that I have tried were really good, that I have on hand. I would be even better if I had that special type of whiskey. At some point I will pick up some of the recommended items. The stories are fascinating and you come to appreciate the art of the cocktail. The artistry and passion at Death and Co. is not to be sounded too sappy.
No longer in the market for another cocktail book
A book! The meat of the text is dedicated to guiding the basics and techniques. There were many lists of essentials and recommendations for spirits. There are a couple of classic cocktails that didn't make the cut, but reading between the lines allowed me to make some judgements about how to elevate other classics that aren't in the book. There are many, straightforward, and innovative original cocktails that are in here. While there are other great cocktail recipes out there on the internet or in other books, I think this book will be sufficient to inspire readers to look in their kitchens and in groceryliquor stores and consider new combinations.
this is an excellent book, full of useful and compelling information
It's not for your basic home bar because this is an excellent book full of useful and compelling information.
The only cocktail book you'll ever need
There won't be another cocktail book that covers so many topics like this one because I've already read the book cover to cover twice. It gives an interesting look into how the bar operates, as well as essential techniques for making cocktails and inventing your own. I've already tried a few recipes from the book and their margarita recipe killed my own, which I had considered my cocktail calling card for years. After reading the negative reviews, I would recommend the Kindle version. The book is well organized and there are a lot of recipes, but being able to search and use hyperlinks is awesome. This is the one to own if you only buy one cocktail book.
   Modern cocktail book
It is a beautiful coffee table book. It touches on a lot of topics when it comes to bars and cocktails. If you wanted to dive into a specific topic, there's an index in the back. I recommend this book to anyone who's interested in cocktails. The bar and cocktail quality is what Death co and set the bar for. It helped me grow as a bartender.
