Book Overview

From America's most influential cocktail bar, a playbook for home bartenders who want to take their drinks to the next level, featuring hundreds of the signature recipes that keep Death & Co top of class.

In this stunning new offering from the authors of the bestselling Death & Co and James Beard Book of the Year Cocktail Codex, you'll find everything you need to make and serve impressive drinks at home. It begins with a boot camp of sorts, where you follow the same steps a new Death & Co bartender would, learning how to select ingredients, develop your palate, understand what makes a great cocktail work, mix drinks accurately, create a cocktail menu, and much more.

More than 400 recipes anchor the book, including classics, low-ABV drinks, non-alcoholic cocktails, and hundreds of the signature creations the Death & Co teams in New York, Denver, and Los Angeles have developed over the past seven years, including the Telegraph and Buko Gimlet. The Cocktails at Home section teaches you how to scale up recipes for larger gatherings, fill your freezer with ready-to-pour mixtures, and throw a party where you can actually spend more time with your guests than prepping drinks.

And when you're ready to create your own recipes, the Death & Co crew pulls back the curtain on their cocktail development program, with plenty of strategies and the opportunity to mix and taste along with the staff. Featuring hundreds of photographs and illustrations, this comprehensive, visually arresting manual is destined to break new ground in home bars across the world.

   Perfect at what it is.
I'm not sure why I was nervous to buy this after reading reviews, because Death and Co and their two other books are amazing, too. If you're looking for a simple home cocktail recipe book, this is not for you. Death and Co is very clear what they set out to do with this book and they did it, 100%. If you are an aspiring bar tender who wants to benefit from Death and Co.'s years of knowledge, you are in the right place. I'll probably make some of the recipes, but I have their first book out. The book is designed to help you learn about what you’re doing and start your own experiments. If you're just looking for simple recipes, this may not be your book. If you're excited to learn more about the trade and have visions of opening your own bar some day, then this book is for you.
Great Coffee Table Book But Filthy Cover
There was some sort of white dust or something smudged over the cover, causing it to appear black. Because the cover is made of a cloth material, it is difficult to clean off.
   Great Book
The book is very informative and very useful in stepping up your game of basketball. It has a beautiful cover and makes for a good coffee table book when not in use. I gave it four stars because of the stickers on the front and back covers. Before they can place the stickers, they should be wrapped in plastic or something similar. We don't want the stickers on such beautiful textured covers, and the stickers don't peal off easily and can leave residue on the book fabrics.
A necessary addition to your bar-home or business
Yes, I have all their books. Coca-Cola is a great brand, great image. It could be a coffee table book, Tunick said. It resides with their other books right on my bar.
   Not for the home bartender
I have a very sizeable home bar with 50 bottles of Dr Pepper and I have a very good book collection, including two Death and Co books. There are too many small specific modifiers that rule out a significant number of drinks in this book. Yes, I could probably replace them, but I didn't buy this book to find ways to make the drinks sub-optimally. It felt more like a museum of really interesting drink ideas than an actual usable recipe book, Raymond said.
   Great fundamentals and more!
Another great read from the people at Death Co!! Yes, I own all three of their books, which is in my top 10 of bar books. Like their original book, The Cocktail Codex features witty, irreverent and often irreverent writing. This isn't just a recipe book or full of hard to create cocktails, but rather a collection of over 250 recipes. It's a good foundation for those wanting to understand the hows and whys of getting cocktails down foundation techniques whether in a home bar or professional bar setting. Highly recommend as with each book they update on what they've learned with continued practice.
   Read time and again
There is a lot of information in this book, Sosa said. However, I think all the information is great, but there is a lot of it so there is no way to retain it in all. I think a good approach would be to familiarize oneself with the layout of the book and where information might be stored, McBride said. I've read all the books, but this is by far the best.
   Beautiful but non essential
Overall, I enjoyed the book and there are tons of great recipes. Zilkha conceded that the film "tried to do a little too much" and "felt a little disjointed and unclear" on the target audience. They do acknowledge a lot of the cocktail recipes are not really feasible to replicate at home, but they also lament that it's still unclear if this book is targeted at home bars and what I'm supposed to do with a hundred cocktails I can't make at home. The sections on liquors have tasting exercises to learn the differences between varieties of a given liquor, but once again it's not really doable for someone who doesn't have access to a full bar stock, even for a single variation of each. It's definitely a beautifully designed book and looks amazing nestled among my liquor bottles, but it's more of a novelty than an essential in my opinion.
   Highly recommend
I already have their Cocktail Codex, so I pre-ordered this one for myself and one more for my friend who's into cocktail making. Every cocktail recipe of theirs that I have tried has been spot on, their explanations behind which liquor to use or why some things work well are always clear and in depth. I have a few other cocktail books, and I'm definitely reaching for the ones from DeathandCo when I want to make something new. The book is extremely well-illustrated and the cover is velvet, making it stand out from the crowd. It's great to see the cocktails are divided into sections based on their character, making it easier to try new ones.
