Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-59) came to America in 1831 to see what a great republic was like. What struck him most was the country's equality of conditions, its democracy. The book he wrote on his return to France, Democracy in America, is both the best ever written on democracy and the best ever written on America. It remains the most often quoted book about the United States, not only because it has something to interest and please everyone, but also because it has something to teach everyone.

Harvey Mansfield and Delba Winthrop's new translation of Democracy in America is only the third since the original two-volume work was published in 1835 and 1840. It is a spectacular achievement, capturing the elegance, subtlety, and profundity of Tocqueville's original. Mansfield and Winthrop have restored the nuances of his language, with the expressed goal to convey Tocqueville's thought as he held it rather than to restate it in comparable terms of today. The result is a translation with minimal interpretation, avoiding the problem that Tocqueville himself read in the first translation of Democracy in America.

The strength of the translation is only one reason that Mansfield and Winthrop's Democracy in America will become the authoritative edition of the text. Read More chevron_right

   Brilliant Interpretation of America's Beginnings
Alexis de Tocqueville sees America, her people and institutions from a foreign perspective and draws numerous insights that are timeless. His ability to contrast early American culture with Europe and cultures from the past shows the reader how and why things were different in America at the time of his visit. Each of the pieces fits together well, progressing along a line of growing appreciation from a man willing to see things as they are, as opposed to one who wants to see things simply. The most compelling are the warnings that de Tocqueville sets forth, many of which have not been heeded by America. These prescriptions for continued social harmony should be revisited and examined for their ability to bring about the best outcomes for all. In any case, de Tocqueville presents an excellent political primer for anyone interested in a deep understanding of social structure, its causes, its benefits and its hazards.

   A Classic
I majored in political science at the college. It seems like every course studied this book, but none of them actually referenced it. All professors want to sell their own commentary on the classics to the students, I suppose. This book is centuries old, but remains an amazing resource for anyone trying to understand the American Republic. This is remarkable to me.

This book was a gift to my husband from my parents. They were pleased with the price and with the speed of delivery. The book was also described in new condition, as stated in the description.

   A timeless, prophetic classic
This was written back in the day when it took greatness to be issued, and then your expedition and research took years, and great people allowed time to write well. And the educated wrote to distant posterity the symphony. And time passed by and blew the chaff away. This is the surviving kernel of truth and honesty before the time of political correctness. I'm done with dating writings targeting the best seller status in the Facebook era. Everywhere i go, I am asked if the universities are stifle writers. My opinion is that they don't sufficiently stifle from them. There is a good seller of books that could have been avoided by a many teacher. Flannery O Connor :

this is the best translation. I certainly liked this copy better than ...
I liked this copy much better than my 30 year old tiny typeface. This edition was very readable in both the language and the typeface.

Surely this is one of the word's greatest political books
This is surely one of the greatest political books in the word. Sadly, I never find time to verify at 1000+ pages. Here I am over my head.

   Must read for everyone
Must read the book It is an education in civics, together with his history of the French Revolution, Doyle's Oxford history and Schama's citizens.
