   Not for Me
This book is for a major in philosophy. It is for me way too theoretical. I have joined a church group discussion around this book, but I am not enjoying the book. I am sure that it would earn 5 stars for someone who understood the great thinkers of the Church.
   Wow, what a spiritual gift!
I am a Roman Catholic with a graduate degree in religious education from Loyola University in New Orleans. This book was recommended to me by my Protestant friend, the selections are just too good.
   Great intro to spiritual growth
Due to the fact that I was in an abusive church, I tended to distrust anything that smacked mysticism or spirituality that bypassed the brain. Nevertheless, I have been more open to works that attempt to speak more to the heart and not just the head to the whole person, if you will. This is a good intro to this end, giving great pieces on which to meditate. I don 't need to be spiritual anymore by doing the following steps. I find myself reading each piece slowly over and over for a week or so, allowing me to move the truths from just intellectual understanding to change in the heart and will.
   Best Devotional I've Ever Had
Fact : I have seen a lot of devotionals and were not useful for me and anyway with respect to the writers. Just kind of sloppy-sentimentality of preachy. This book is very useful and solid. I have two friends with whom I meet on Saturday mornings and we do a chapter a week.
   A great read.
Some of the older authors enjoyed reading. Probably would never have heard of them, let alone read them without this book.
Great book. I used this for a class in ...
Book is great! This course I used for a class in Seminary. For any seminarian or person in ministry, great reference book is needed.
In the past, I have not been a fan of devotionals. I loved especially the introductions to each sage, putting them in historical context. Highly recommended to all, especially to the non-evangelical unfamiliar with the richness in evangelical circles.
