The diction keeps you on your toes and gives a good insight, I feel
The story of Roger Bacon is well researched and gives a good insight into the forces at play in 13 th century Europe and the beginning of a scientific awakening.
Unless you can understand old english forget this book
This is one of the books I couldn't finish. It was too difficult to get through it in the old english version.
   Blish's best book
I can't understand why this work isn't in print. It deserves both hardback and soft publication. I have been reading this novel for 35 years. Doctor Mirabilis is a description of the mind and emotions of one of the West's earliest scientific thinkers. James Blish's other work, A Case of Conscience, is set in the future and has a central character who is both a Jesuit and a scientist. Doctor Mirabilis is located in a library. The 1964 Faber hardback is going for hundreds of dollars.
a great book about the Middle Ages
If you' re looking for a book that captures the atmosphere of the Middle Ages - both the intellectual life and the everyday life - this is the book for you. I agree with the other reviewer that this is a classic and should be more known. The piece of literature is very well written and the content is interesting. It is too short for my liking. T.H is a novel that captures the feel of life in the High Middle Ages very well. The Once and Future King is written by White.
Good book, ruined by badly-executed transfer to digital
When I read this book on paper, I loved it, but it has been scanned and converted into a text book on the Amazon platform. The letters thorn and hath have been replaced by 'p' and ' bath'. 4 stars for the book and 2 stars for this edition.
Doesn't really work for me, sadly
I read this when I was a teenager and thought I'd try it again 50 years later. Most of the story is fantasy because Blish draws out the life of Roger Bacon from a few known facts and documents. The author irritates him by including Latin, Middle English and his pretty terrible versions of English regional dialects in one speech. Blish explains in the introduction why he's doing this, but it doesn't work for me. It wasn't easy to read at first.
interesting story, but who did the terrible editing job?
This is an interesting work on a fascinating historical figure, but it becomes almost unreadable at some points because of repeated, gross grammatical, and spelling errors. It's a shame, because there are other e- books by this publisher that I'd like to purchase, but I' ll probably look elsewhere because it's not worth the savings if you have to go through such shoddy editing. It was too bad.
